Appendix S1. Plants surveyed for pollen germination site. When collected at botanical gardens, stigmas were cross pollinated, if possible, using a paintbrush, and the entire carpel was collected into 50% Karnovsky’s fixative; pollen was also dusted onto solidified pollen growth medium. From other field sites , entire plants were transferred to the laboratory (in a cooler with an ice pack), before pollen was dusted in situ or in vitro ; plants were then pressed for voucher specimens.
