As World War II began in Europe with the Fall of France (May 1940) and the Battle of Britain (July 1940), the United States officially remained neutral (Neutrality Acts) but aided Great Britain in its fight against Germany. In the Pacific Ocean, Japan’s territorial expansion (Manchuria, French Indochina) lead to growing tensions with the United States, which peaked when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
