APPENDIX C : Relator Codes

Introduction

Codes from this list may be used in subfield $4 of fields in the 7-- INTELLECTUAL RESPONSIBILITY BLOCK. When more than one code is to be used in conjunction with a single name, each code should be carried in a separate subfield $4.

The codes in this list are not mutually exclusive. Institutions making use of such codes should attempt to use the most specific code applicable when one or more would seem to apply. The use of relator codes in UNIMARC is optional.

Relator codes can be either numerical or alphabetical. The alphabetic three-character codes cater for a precise identification of relationships in the case of a musical work, and are used instead of codes 545 and 721, when needed by the cataloguing agency. They correspond to the values in field 145 $b-$d, positions 2-4.

Thus, for performers in musical works, the cataloguing agency will use either the appropriate numeric code (for example 721 = singer), or an alphabetic codes, if a more precise identification of the function is required (for example vso = soprano).
As for the alphabetic codes, one can either use one of the general codes appearing in the second column indicating the family of instruments, voice or ensembles, or a specific code identifying the instrument, the voice or the ensemble (for example kun = keyboard in general or kpf = piano in particular).

Pour un interprète d’une œuvre musicale :
