Course Materials

We will not use a formal textbook in this class; instead, students should keep a three ring binder for handouts, lecture notes, research assignments, activities, ballots and self-evaluations. Many students find it helpful to acquire a timer to assist with time management during rounds. Students should bring a highlighter and two pens of different colors to class each day. The teacher reserves the right to adjust any section of the course syllabus at any time during the semester to more adequately meet the needs, abilities and interests of the students.

Course Policies:

1. Attendance: As much of this class will be based on class participation, regular attendance will be vital to success. Informal assignments, peer evaluations and group exercises will be difficult, and at times impossible to make-up. For this reason, students with numerous absences will find it difficult to succeed.

2. Conduct: Students are expected to follow all school policies as noted in the student handbook. No food, candy, drinks or gum is allowed in class. Evidence of such items will be confiscated and not returned. No radios, cell phones, I-Pods, MP3 players, etc. will be allowed to be used during class except as a timer. Notebook, pens, highlighter, paper, and a cooperative attitude are necessary every day.
3. Competition: Tournament competition provides the practical application of the research and analysis and allows for greater skill development. It is the “homework” experience for students in this course. Because it is necessary to apply the skills and knowledge learned in class in actual public competition, all students are expected to take part in at least three tournaments during the semester. Students are also invited to take part in the Debate Center Seminar each Wednesday at GSU. (attendance at two debate center seminars counts as the equivalent of one tournament.) Participation at many tournaments is supported by APS, however, students may be asked to contribute money to cover the costs of food, housing and transportation. Please attend the parent meeting to find out more about the team.
4. NFL: Students are invited to join the National Forensics League, an honor society for students who participate in speech and debate activities.
5. Students and parents may contact me at on my cell phone 404-444-8691 or online at mwilloughby@atlanta.k12.ga.us. Parents and students may find the team web site www.gradyspeaks.org a helpful tool to obtain schedule information and permission slips for each tournament. We encourage all parents to attend the general organizational Booster Club meeting on August 25 at 7:00 pm in the theater. We will discuss the tournament schedule and procedures as well as team fundraising and events.
I have read the course plans and understood the expectations and requirements and I agree to abide by them.
