Preview:
On the day that Billy Rowell became the all-time games played leader in Keys history, Rowell provided the only clout doubling twice in a 4-1 Frederick loss yesterday afternoon. Having dropped two-of-three games in Salem the Keys now head to Kinston for the first of four games at Grainger Stadium.
Eight of the Keys last 14 games are against Kinston. The Indians are currently two games out of first place in the Southern Division, but only 1.5 games behind Salem for the final playoff spot in the division. The Keys will send RHP Oliver Drake to the hill in the series opener.
First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. with coverage beginning at 6:40 p.m. on The Frederick Keys Baseball Network.

KEYS: RHP Oliver Drake (4-6, 4.65)

  • On a strict pitch count that has limited to five innings or less per start.

  • In ten outings, nine of which starts has not allowed more than two runs in an appearance.

  • Baseball America tabbed as a top NAIA prospect along with Ashur Tolliver in 2009 draft who the Orioles signed in the 5th round of the 2009 draft as well.

KEYNOTES:

ROWELL’S RECORD… Yesterday, Billy Rowell set the all-time record formerly held by Cory Keylor (2002-04) atop the all-time games played list in Frederick Keys history. It was his 334th game played in his Carolina League career. Rowell has been a three-year starter for the Keys and at age 21 is still under the average age for a player at this level.

BERRY HITS THE BOOKS… As the Keys hit the road they will lose one of their most effective pitchers in RHP Ryan Berry. The first pitcher from the 2009 draft class to reach Frederick, Berry went 2-2 with a 3.04 ERA in 18 appearances, 12 of which starts. He returns to Rice University for one final semester to finish his double major. Keys LHP Nathan Moreau will be soon doing the same, headed back to school at the University of Georgia after his start on Friday night against Potomac.

SERIES HISTORY… Kinston – 170-252 – The Keys are looking for a winning record over Kinston in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1993-94. Entering this series the clubs are even up at 6-6 on the year even though the Keys have won four straight against the Indians. Last year Frederick went 13-7 against Kinston winning eight-of-ten games at Grainger Stadium.

THIS DATE IN KEYS HISTORY… August 23, 2008– The Keys win going away 9-2 in Salem as OF Paul Winterling has a big day with a double, triple and four RBI’s. Winterling, a Johns Hopkins product, was a Key in 2007-08 from Glenelg, MD, just 20 minutes from Frederick.
