Globalization and Atlantic Canada Worksheet

Using internet news websites or physical media such as newspapers or magazines, find five specific global events that you think you may have a connection to. You may need to use more than one article to get a complete picture of the event that is occurring.
You must show a minimum of one example each of Cultural Globalization, Political Globalization, and Economic Globalization. One event must show a positive effect of globalization and one event must show a negative effect of globalization.
Sources could include, but are not limited to, the Chronicle Herald, the Globe and Mail, MacLean’s Magazine, Time Magazine, CBC News, CNN, or BBC News.
Complete the following tasks for each event that you find:

Brief Event Description:

The Syrian Civil War has created a large scale humanitarian crisis on a scale that has been not seen since World War II. Many of the Syrian population have been displaced as a result of the conflict and are now refugees. A group of Nova Scotians from Hubbards are raising money in an effort to bring two refugees to their community.

How does this event affect Canada or connect our country to the Global Village?

The Canadian government is working to speed up the process to allow Syrian Refugees into Canada, but the process can take from anywhere to two months to two years

How does this event affect Atlantic Canada or connect our region to the Global Village?

People from Hubbards, Nova Scotia have raised $70 thousand in an effort to bring two Syrian refugees to their community. This group and others like it are seeking advice from The Immigration Services Association of Nova Scotia on how to bring Syrian refugees to Nova Scotia. So far eleven refugees have made their way to Nova Scotia and 44 more are in the application process.

My school is raising money in an effort to support people from Syria who are refugees.

Is this event an example of a positive or negative effect of globalization?

Although the overall crisis is a tragedy, this article shows a positive effect of globalization because people in Canada are trying to help Syrian refugees who otherwise would not get help if they were not connected to the global village.
