Greek Mythology
Lesson Summary
Myths are a way of understanding the world. This lesson is about Greek mythology, but every culture has myths. Myths define social customs and beliefs, explain natural and psychological phenomena, and provide a way for people to discuss things that cause anxiety. Myths also make great stories. They come up in literature all over the place, from really serious stuff like Dante to comic strips. Myths inspire music; actually the word music comes from the mythological muses who inspired art of all kinds. Painters like Michelangelo and Botticelli were inspired by myths. Even children’s movies are a good place to look for myths; you will find them everywhere, including Snow White, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings.

Activities
Activities Before Using the Computer
Make sure all notes that have been taken in class are completed and organized.

Strategies to develop students' attitudes towards the problem, motivation, and overall mindfulness:
I must make sure all students have a good base knowledge about how the myths in Ancient Greece influenced their society. There must be a general interest in the culture of those two civilizations that can carry over to the project. Students should develop an understanding of how Ancient Greek culture continues to surround us today.

Activities While Using the Computer
Students will work with a computer as individuals. Students will be using search engines to obtain information about various myths.

Group Information:
Students will not be working in groups for this lesson.

Activities After Using the Computer
Students will use collected information to create an original work.

Supporting Activities
There should be enough computers for students to be engaged at the same time. If there is some problem where they can not, I will have reference books available to use as another source of information.
Assessment
Students will be assessed by means of:

  • Task Completion – graphic organizers should be completely and neatly filled out.

  • Writing Rubric – supplied to students to outline grading process.

  • Written Reflection – each student will write a reflection of the project that includes what knowledge or understanding they have attained during the process.

Included in the assessment:
Feedback checklist based upon the writing rubric.
