Company and Internship Information

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is the regional planning and intergovernmental coordination agency for the 10-county area including Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale counties, as well as the City of Atlanta. For 60 years, ARC and its predecessor agencies have helped to focus the region's leadership, attention and resources on key issues of regional consequence.

ARC is dedicated to unifying the region's collective resources to prepare the metropolitan area for a prosperous future. It does so through professional planning initiatives, the provision of objective information and the involvement of the community in collaborative partnerships.

The Information Technology Services division handles the day-to-day maintenance of departmental software and hardware including the company’s website, its servers, network computers and peripherals. Their services extend to specific projects among divisions. The intern position is required to assist with weekly system and network updates, server maintenance, troubleshooting network computers and printers, and ensure an efficient end user experience.



Objectives:

  • Understand the significance of the Information Technology Services division’s role at ARC and the interaction between the division and its customers.

  • Learn how to set up and configure computers to ARC’s network?

  • Review and monitor spam filters for the entire agency.

  • Gain experience troubleshooting network computers in a large organization.

  • Gain field experience using SQL in the agency’s database.

  • Understand the server maintenance procedures for a large organization.

  • Learn how to backup data and storage for an organization.

  • Gather business requirements from customers and provide customer support.

  • Gain experience working in the division and reporting to management.

  • Understand how a large company operates from the IT division’s point of view.

A list of specific tasks to achieve the objectives:

  1. Assist with computer setup and configuration.

  2. Monitor spam filters.

  3. Troubleshoot individual Desktop and Network computers

  4. Remote Access configuration and troubleshooting.

  5. Work with SQL in the company’s database.

  6. Assist with ARC Server maintenance.

  7. Backup data and storage.

  8. Assist End-users as needed with technical issues.

  9. Participate in projects received from customers.

  10. Provide feedback to management as needed.

Finish Internship orientation and become acquainted with systems

March 30, 2013

Become Proficient in using remote access to configure network computers

Complete division project 1

May 31, 2013

Become proficient in SQL

Understand how to troubleshoot multiple issues within the network

Assist with at least 2 division projects



End Internship and submit necessary documents

Exit interview
