1September 17, 2015 SOCIOLOGY 495 INTERNSHIPS Internships: 1. Provide an educational experience through work involvement in a community setting. 2. Are available at agencies providing services in AIDS, Family and Mental Health, and Gerontology. 3. Are available at numerous agencies in Long Beach as well as the Southern California area. 4. Are available in the fall, spring, and winter sessions. 5. Can be taken as an elective in the concentration or as one of the two required electives in upper division Sociology courses. Students are required to work: 1. 160 hours for 4 units 2. 120 hours for 3 units 3. 80 hours for 2 units 4. 40 hours for 1 unit Also required are a mid-term and a final evaluation to be conducted by the agency, a journal and a final paper. Most internships do not pay, but the few that do usually pay in the $7 - $11 an hour range. Students often learn about job openings through their internships. Many students have been offered paid positions upon completion of their internships. In addition, many students have been able to obtain positive letters of recommendation from their agency supervisors.
