  1. Status Bar gives information about the device at a glance.

  2. App icons represent applications and bookmarks.

  3. Home Button: Multiple uses; including exiting apps and entering search.

  4. Front Camera / Back Camera: Dual cameras for face to face calls.

  5. Multi-Touch screen: Most actions will be initiated using touch screen controls.

  6. Sleep/Wake button used for power on/off and sleep/wake function.

  7. Side Switch can be used for muting or screen orientation lock.

  8. Volume button turns volume up and down.

  9. Headphone jack: Accommodates standard headphones.

  10. Dock Connector used to connect the device to your PC and also to charge the device.

  11. Note the speaker and microphone locations.

  1. Status Icons




  1. Multi-Touch Screen

  1. The multi-touch screen is used to perform most of the device functions.

  2. Most common actions: Swipe, Scroll, Zoom, Click, double tap.

  3. Touch screen also used to for keyboard functions.



  1. Syncing the iPad 2

  1. Prevent automatic sync: Itunes > Edit > Preferences > Devices.

  2. Choose which categories sync in the tabs toward the top of the screen.

  3. Device can sync contacts, calendars, mail, notes, and bookmarks from the info tab. Modifying these setting from both the device and itunes can result in duplicate data.

  4. Apps supporting file sharing can be moved between the device and the computer if using an Apple operating system. Most users will be using the KCOE cloud to transfer files.



  1. Settings

  1. Airplane mode: Sets device to follow regulations regarding electronic devices and flight.

5A. Connecting to Wi-Fi Networks

  1. When using network dependent apps users will be prompted to join a network if they have not already done so.

  2. To setup a connection go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Choose the network name > enter password into prompt > Join. This will setup and save the network configuration.

  3. Users can confirm network connection by looking for the corresponding status icon in the status bar..

  4. To troubleshoot an existing connection users can use the “Renew Lease” feature to renew the DHCP information or use the “Forget This Network” feature to delete the connection and reconfigure the network.

  1. Location Services: Allows the device to use your current location for certain actions, such as Maps and adding location information to Photos.

  2. Brightness and Wallpaper: Adjust brightness of the display and/or choose background image.

  3. Picture Frame: Allows user to configure the picture frame settings.

  4. General contains many options; we will go over those setting now.

  1. About: Provides general information about the device.

  2. Sounds: Turn on/off alert sounds for some of the most common events.

  3. Network: Can adjust network settings (same as Wi-Fi setting) and/or configure VPN settings (advanced).

  4. Bluetooth: Connect or disconnect Bluetooth devices such as keyboards, earpieces, mice, etc.

  5. Spotlight Search: User can choose which data will included in searches.

  6. Auto-Lock: Choose the time interval at which the device locks itself.

  7. Passcode Lock: Configure a passcode requirement for unlocking the device.

  8. Restrictions: Restrict or allow certain Apps or services.

  9. Use Side Switch to:

Lock rotation: Lock the screens orientation.

Mute: Mute the device.



  1. Date & Time: Set date and time, choose between standard or military time, and choose time zone.

  2. Keyboard: Configure keyboard functions.

  3. International: Choose language, keyboard, region format (how date and time is displayed), and calendar format.

  4. Accessibility: Turn VoiceOver on/off, zoom option, text option, display option, Audio (most sounds will be stereo), Verbalize auto-corrections and capitalizations, Set up triple click option.

  5. Battery Percentage: Toggle on/off.

  6. Reset: Reset device settings and content.

5B. Configuring Email Accounts

  1. Some of the most common email services are already configured.

  2. Exchange accounts require Server info.

  3. Other accounts will require protocol (IMAP or POP), incoming hostname, and outgoing hostname. This information will be readily available from users’ mail provider.

  4. Can email photos from browser by tapping the arrow icon.

  5. Mail is searchable, contacts can be synced.

  6. Folders can be created on users’ pc and then synced to the device.



  1. Safari: Users can configure their browser settings and defaults.

  2. iPod: Configure media playback on the device.

  3. Video: Adjust video playback options.

  4. Photos: Configure slideshow options.

  5. Notes: Choose font used in the Notes app.

  6. Store: Allows user to configure the account used for app and media purchases.



  1. Mobile Me and Find My iPad

  1. The iPad 2 should be running iOS 4.3.

  2. Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars

  3. Click “Add Account” and select Mobile Me

  4. Enter your Apple ID or create an account. Users may need to verify their account by following the instructions in the verification email sent from Apple.

  5. When the find my iPad message appears toggle the switch to on.

  6. Users can track, lock, wipe, display messages, and/or initiate sounds from www.me.com.



  1. App Store and iTunes

  1. Users will need to create an Apple account and acquire a an Apple ID in order to download content from Apple (even the free content).

  2. Users can browse apps by using the tabs located at the bottom of the App Store: Featured, Genius (chooses apps based on usage), Top Charts, and Categories (Free and Paid).

  3. When updates are available for installed apps an alert will be displayed over the update tab. Users can navigate to the update screen and choose to install updates for their software.

  4. Apps can be installed from any page by pressing on the price button (reads “free” if the app is free), a new box will be displayed reading “install” click the “install” button. Users will be prompted for their Apple ID password, once authenticated download will begin.

  5. Users can also tap on the app icon to get more information on the app, and download form the screen by pressing the “install” button.

  6. Refer to the Special Education Apps PDF for examples of educational applications.

  7. Itunes mainly for entertainment, however there is a lot of free educational content under the “iTunes U” tab.



  1. Managing Apps and the Home Screen

  1. Bookmarks can be added to the Home Screen and will display an icon like an app.

  2. Apps can be arranged on the home screen by pressing and holding any icon until they begin to wiggle and an “x” appears in their upper left hand corner. The apps can then be dragged to their desired location.

  3. To create folders place an icon on top of another icon, this will create a new folder and allow users to name it. To delete the folder just remove the contents and it will be automatically deleted.

  4. Delete apps by pressing and holding any icon and then pressing the “x” located in the corner of the icon.

  5. Close apps by pressing the Home button.

  6. To force apps to shutdown hold the power button until the power off dialog appears then press and hold the Home button until redirected to the Home Screen.



  1. Built-ins, iBooks, and Web RDP

  1. Camera: The camera can be used to take pictures and record videos. Users can zoom in and out by tapping the screen until the zoom feature appears. Users can also use the camera as a document scanner. Users can take pictures of documents and save them to convert them later using the appropriate software. Users can take screen captures on the device by pressing the home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously.

  2. Facetime: Facetime allows Ipad2 users to talk face to face using their devices. Users can dial out to people using their Apple ID as long as the user has an active Wi-Fi connection. Users can switch between the front and back cameras in order to provide different views. An alternative is Skype, which allows users to have face to face conversations with other devices as well (Xoom, Android, etc.).

  3. Photos: users can save, arrange, and sync images with the device.

  4. Photo Booth: Just having fun with photos. Users can save images from emails or Safari.

  5. YouTube: Search and view YouTube videos.

  6. Notes: Users can take and save them to the device and/or email them to the desired account.

  7. Maps: Users can use maps to find locations and get directions. By utilizing the current location feature the user can get directions or see maps with the click of a button. Users can also change map views, and view current traffic conditions.

  8. ipod: Access stored media.

  9. itunes and App Store: Download apps and media.

  10. ibooks: Great PDF viewer, can save PDF files to users library. Tons of free books and resources.

  11. Safari: The iPad internet browser.

  12. Mail: Configure and sync email accounts to be viewed on the iPad.

  13. Game Center: Play game solo or connected with friends.

  14. Videos: Display, save, and organize a video library.

  15. Contacts: Users can sync contacts with their existing contacts software.

  16. Calendar: Sync with your existing calendar software, keep track of events and receive alerts.

  17. WebRDP: Remote desktop app, is required to use certain features of the KCOE Cloud.



  1. Stoneware

  1. Users can easily share files between each other, PC’s, and other devices by using the file folders located in the KCOE cloud.

  2. Files are best viewed in PDF format using the iBooks app.

  3. Create and view Microsoft Office Documents in the Cloud using RDP.

  4. Use notepad to create notes and save them to your network drive.

  5. Access the cloud at https://kcoecloud.kings.k12.ca.us/



  1. Restoring the iPad

  1. The device can be restored to factory settings in iTunes and from the device itself.

  2. The device can be restored from a backup using iTunes.
