AVIATION STUDENTS RECEIVE DRONE FELLOWSHIP

Aviation Studies student Richard Kovats of Egg Harbor Township received a fellowship from the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium, funded by NASA, to study the effectiveness of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS)in search and rescue applications.

Kovats, an Aviation Studies major, is working with Mid-Atlantic Regional Search and Rescue (MARSAR) to develop standard operating procedures for using a sUAS or drone in search and rescue missions.
Nine other Atlantic Cape Aviation Studies students also received fellowships from the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium: Christopher Chambers, Ian Hutchings, Justin Houston, Scott Hogan, Stephen Kozlowski, Phuong Le, Jeffrey Leming, Ange Nissen and Sarah Anne Woltmann. Their research includes using unmanned aircraft systems to map water quality, collect geospatial data, shellfish cultivation, surveillance, water search and rescue, blueberry and cranberry cultivation surveillance and 3D modeling.

FORMER STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Former Atlantic Cape engineering student Haseeb Bukhari graduated with his A.S. in 2016 and transferred to Rowan University. He credits his education at Atlantic Cape with preparing him for the rigors of the engineering program at Rowan, explaining: “In my experience at Rowan University, I have faced a great deal of work… [It] seems to be quite difficult to the extent that most people would give up, which is not me. Thanks to the great staff members of Atlantic Cape, I am well equipped to handle many problems, and to see them in a way that has truly helped me accomplish my goals…[Faculty] such as John Stratton, Laurie Lemons and others in the STEM program have helped me understand how to conquer great tasks.”

During the spring of 2017, Haseeb frequently returned to Atlantic Cape to speak with current students in ENGR101, Introduction to Engineering, about his learning experiences at both Atlantic Cape and Rowan University.

VISITING PROFESSOR DR. PETER OUDEMANS

During the spring 2017 semester, the Information Systems and Aviation Studies program welcomed this year’s Beacons by the Sea Visiting Professor, Dr. Peter Oudemans. Oudemans hails from the Department of Plant Biology and Pathology at Rutgers University and is stationed at the Marucci Blueberry and Cranberry Research and Extension Center where his research tackles problems in the biology and control of fungal diseases of blueberries and cranberries. His research uses such tools as remote sensing and geographic information system methodologies to detect, map, quantify and track plant pathogens. He taught two courses, AVIT185 (Special Topics in Information Technology – Applying Technology in Agriculture) and CISM185 (Remote Sensing Using Unmanned Aircraft Systems). In the special topics course, students learned the basics of scouting for and solving agricultural problems on commercial farms, and engaged in fieldwork with drones. The remote sensing course introduced students to using unmanned aerial systems to collect and analyze information about the earth’s surface.

ON-CAMPUS EVENTS

ATLANTIC CAPE VISITS US COAST GUARD TRAINING CENTER Open House

STEM faculty participated in Atlantic Cape’s bi-annual Open House on April 2, 2017. The 3D printer and Engineering Club’s skateboard project were on display, and three engineering students took part in the demonstrations to prospective students and their parents.

College Awareness Day

On March 24, 2017, College Awareness Day, around 50 students participated in the two sessions of the “STEM Workshop” presented by STEM faculty and coordinated by Dean Ravi Manimaran. The students really enjoyed the Chemistry Demonstrations, the Tour of Labs within the STEM Building, Aviation Flight Simulator Demo, Engineering Club’s Remote Controlled Skate Board Project Demo and Media Production Lab Tour and Demo (including the drone).

OFF-CAMPUS EVENTS

Meeting of the Community College Computer Consortium of NJ

Professor Bill Dougherty and Assistant Professor Richard Kalman attended the fall 2016 meeting of the Community College Computer Consortium of NJ on Oct. 28, 2016. The event was held at the South Jersey Technology Park at Rowan University. Attendees were given a tour of the Virtual Reality Labs and participated in simulations including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Driving Simulation, 3D Printing and a 10-sided 3D Cave.

On Dec. 14, 2016,

Bo Zilovic, Andre Richburg and Kristin Jackson visited the US Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. Atlantic Cape and the US Coast Guard are partnering to provide educational opportunities to Coast Guard service members, reservists and civilian employees. During their visit, faculty discussed admissions procedures, degree programs, course scheduling, transfer of credits and the Prior Learning Assessment program.

New Dean of STEM, Ravi Manimaran

During the fall 2016 semester, Atlantic Cape Community College welcomed a new Dean of STEM Programs, Ravi Manimaran. Ravi Manimaran has a background in engineering and looks forward to strengthening all programs within STEM. Dean Manimaran represented Atlantic Cape Community College at Stockton University’s commencement ceremony on Dec. 18, 2016.

OUTREACH AND SERVICE

Jersey Shore Science Fair

The 2017 Jersey Shore Science Fair was held March 18 at Stockton University. Students from Cape May, Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth counties in grades 6–12 competed in 14 different categories for the chance to move on to the next level of competition, The Delaware Valley Science Fair. Several Atlantic Cape students, employees and faculty served as judges at the science fair. Everyone enjoyed talking to the students and seeing the fascinating projects.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

NEW PROGRAMS AND ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS

Dual Enrollment Aviation Academy at ACIT

Beginning with the fall 2016 semester, the Atlantic County Institute of Technology has partnered with Atlantic Cape Community College to offer high school students in ACIT’S Academy of Aviation Studies the opportunity to earn college credits.
This new dual enrollment program started off with 15 students who completed courses such as Aviation Weather and Airport Management and received training in drone operation. The courses are taught by Atlantic Cape faculty, and the program is free for the students. Startup costs are funded by a four-year $600,000 County Vocational Partnership Grant from the state Department of Education.

in Philadelphia, Nov. 6-9, 2016, hosted by the Community College of Philadelphia. The STEMtech conference offers the opportunity for colleagues to share and explore the best of STEM, analytics, big data, advanced technology and learning management architecture. Engaging speakers discussed significant issues facing community college educators, followed by forums and discussions. Extensive exhibits featured education and technology related products and services to all who attended.

Academic Impressions Conference

Assistant Professor Bojan Zilovic attended the Academic Impressions Conference in New Orleans, Oct. 17-19, 2016. The conference offered faculty the opportunity to develop a comprehensive retention plan tailored to each unique institutional context. Assistant Professor Zilovic participated in group coaching sessions that discussed current retention plans, initiatives and challenges assisting faculty in building comprehensive approaches to asking research questions, collecting and analyzing data, and using the results.

STUDENT CLUBS AND CLASSES

Engineering 101

During the spring semester, students in adjunct instructor Matt Miller’s Engineering 101 class were challenged to construct towers out of spaghetti, tape, playdough, rubber bands and twist ties. Each building component had a cost per unit assigned to it. The goal was to lift an oversized marshmallow as high as possible while minimizing the cost of construction. The winning design lifted the marshmallow over 1.2 meters.
