Overview of the post

The appointee will be an international research leader in the field of organisation studies with an interest in the topic of leadership, and be willing and able to teach leadership and management courses across the range of degree programmes and executive education offered by the Saïd Business School.


The appointee will be responsible for developing and delivering a world-class research and teaching programme at Oxford in the area of organisation studies and preferably with a focus on leadership. The appointee should have a world-class track record in research, have published in top peer-reviewed scholarly journals and possess the vision and management capability to develop a major programme of research.  This will involve initiating grant funding, overseeing research and administrative personnel, facilitating interaction through seminars and conferences, and overseeing a research dissemination strategy that targets both academic and policy-oriented audiences. The appointee will also be expected to enrich the research and teaching environment at the Saïd Business School and in particular to take a prominent role in the design and delivery of leadership and organisation studies teaching at master’s level and in executive education. The appointee would also be expected to provide direction and mentoring for less experienced colleagues and the next generation of academics. Salary will be competitive relative to senior level appointments in the Business School. Proven academic distinction can be recognised by the University by the award of the title of Professor (subject to approval by the University on receipt of appropriate references).
Main duties and responsibilities

  1. To undertake research of a quality suitable for publication in the very top journals in the field of management and organisation studies. It is expected that the successful candidate will have an established research interest in Leadership.

  2. To initiate grant applications and lead research teams.

  3. To lead and manage a research group of faculty, post-doctoral researchers and graduate students.

  4. To contribute to the intellectual leadership of the Business School’s academic community as a whole, providing direction and mentoring for less experienced colleagues.

  5. To undertake teaching at graduate, undergraduate and executive level as directed by the Head of the TOPOS Area group within a normal stint of 288 teaching points.

  6. To provide academic supervision for research students.

  7. To lead committees or working groups/influencing stakeholders and contributing to the research strategy.

  8. To contribute to the general academic and administrative work of the Saïd Business School in a cooperative and collegial way.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

  1. Leading authority in the field of management and organisation studies with considerable international distinction.

  2. Ability and willingness to take a strategic lead in the development of research and teaching in Leadership in degree awarding programmes in the University and in Executive Education.

  3. A PhD in a relevant discipline

  4. Significant experience of developing, delivering, and managing successful research programmes.

  5. Proven track record of successful research funding applications and significant experience of managing research grants.

  6. Excellent publication record in organisation studies topics including leadership with an impact on practice and/or policy.

  7. Ability to teach effectively at graduate, undergraduate and executive education level.

  8. A willingness to contribute in a collegial, supportive manner to the work of the TOPOS Area and the Saïd Business School.

The Social Sciences Division

Social Sciences is one of four academic Divisions in the University, each with considerable devolved budgetary and financial authority; and responsibility for providing a broad strategic focus across its constituent disciplines. Thirteen departments, one faculty, and three cross-divisional research units come under the aegis of the division which spans the full range of social science disciplines with links into the humanities and physical sciences (including Law, Management, Economics, Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Social Policy, Area Studies, Development Studies, Education, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geography, Public Policy). Saïd Business School

Established in 1996, the Saïd Business School is a full service business school and one of Europe’s newest and fastest growing business schools. An integral part of Oxford University, the School embodies the academic rigour and forward thinking that has made Oxford a world leader in education. The School has an established reputation for research in a wide range of areas, including finance and economics, entrepreneurship, strategy and international business, and business in society. Research in the Saïd Business School

Since its inception, the School has promoted a stimulating research environment and now has several major research centres and research groups. The School has been moving rapidly to create a major research capability that will establish it as one of the leading research-focused business schools in the world.


The principle behind the development of research in the Business School is that it intertwines management functions with practice and policy. The School is organised around three academic Areas (i.e. teaching and research groups) and research centres. The three groups are Finance, Accounting, Management Science and Economics (FAME); Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management and Science and Technology (TOPOS); and Strategy, Innovation and Marketing (SIM). The successful candidate will join the TOPOS Area.
The research centres cross functions and are directed towards specific sectors (e.g. professional service firms, science and technology) and policy issues (e.g. social entrepreneurship and taxation). These include the BT Centre for Major Programme Management, Novak Druce Centre for Professional Service Firms, Complex Agent-Based Dynamic Networks (CABDyN), Oxford Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Oxford Finance Research Centre, Oxford Institute of Retail Management, Centre for Business Taxation, Centre for Corporate Reputation, and the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. The combination of academic areas and research centres allows research to have a rigorous disciplinary basis while at the same time ensuring its relevance to practice and policy.
The Academic Area: TOPOS (Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management and Science and Technology Studies)

The TOPOS Area combines Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management and Science & Technology Studies (STS), plus a number of research centres including CABDyN, Oxford Institute of Retail Management [OXIRM], and the BT Centre for Major Programme Management. For teaching purposes, the focus of the Area is on the leadership and management of organisations and operations and on the management of major programmes. Members teach on all of the general management programmes in the School, from undergraduate to MBA/EMBA, as well as making an important contribution to Executive Education via teaching on open and custom Programmes.


Within Organisational Behaviour the research interests of its members broadly focus around the organisation, leadership and management of organisations of professionals. Professor Morris has published widely on various topics concerning the management of professional service firms, particularly focusing on the nature of innovation and change. Professors Morris and Dopson are collaborating with colleagues in Executive Education on research into leadership development. Professor Sue Dopson is well known for her work on various topics in healthcare management relating to organisational and individual transformation. Dr David Barron also works on healthcare management and has researched evolutionary models of organisations. Dr Darbishire researches the area of employment relations within the Telecoms sector and on leaders’ decision making processes. Dr Michael Smets has recently joined the group and his research focuses on the interface between practice theory and institution theory
Within Operations Management, Professor David Upton is widely known for his work on Information Technology and Operations. Dr Steve New is currently working on the application of lean management techniques in other sectors such as healthcare and, with Dr Reed-Tsochas, on analysing the Toyota supply chain model. Dr Blackmon has published on a range of topics including service delivery systems and research methods.
Professor Flyvberg leads the BT Centre for Major Programme Management and is widely known for his work on decision making in major programmes. Professor Steven Woolgar heads the STS group and has a world-class reputation for his contribution to scholarship in this area. Dr Reed-Tsochas leads research into complex systems in CABDyN. Senior Research Fellow Dr Richard Cuthbertson heads the Oxford Institute for Retail Management which is well known for its applied research in the retail sector.
Faculty Members of the group currently include: Dr David Barron [Organisational Behaviour (OB)]; Dr Kate Blackmon [Operations Management (OM)]; Dr Owen Darbishire [OB]; Professor Sue Dopson [OB]; Professor Bent Flyvberg [BT Centre for Programme Management]; Professor Tim Morris [OB]; Dr Steve New [OM]; Professor David Upton [OM]; Professor Roy Westbrook [OM, currently serving as Deputy Dean of the Business School]; Professor Steve Woolgar [STS]; Dr Felix Reed Tsochas [CABDyN]. There are a number of Executive Education Fellows in TOPOS, including Dr Marc Thompson, Dr Paul Chapman, Dr Gerd Islei and Dr Oliver Fischer. The Area is also home to numerous research fellows and doctoral students and two Visiting Professors, Professor Louise Fitzgerald and Professor Royston Greenwood.
Teaching in the Saïd Business School

At the undergraduate level, all degrees are joint with other disciplines. Currently the School offers three undergraduate degrees. These are the Honour Schools of Engineering, Economics and Management (EEM), of Materials, Economics and Management (MEM), and of Economics and Management (E & M).


EEM and MEM are four-year courses. There are currently over 150 students on the two courses. A particularly important aspect of these degrees is the direct experience of industry that they offer. E & M is a three-year degree. After a compulsory first year, students are provided with a wide range of possible combinations of Economics and Management subjects. About 80 students per annum are now admitted on to this programme, which is one of the most popular in Oxford.
At the postgraduate level, the School runs an MBA programme with about 250 students each year. This is a one-year programme spanning a full 12-month period from the beginning of October until the end of September. An Executive MBA is also offered. This is delivered on a part-time basis over two years; around 50 students are admitted annually. The School also runs an MSc in Financial Economics together with the Department of Economics. In addition, an MSc in Law and Finance was launched in October 2010. This full-time, ten-month programme, taught jointly with the Faculty of Law, offers students with a prior background in law the chance to develop an advanced interdisciplinary understanding of relevant economic and financial contexts, and combines a highly analytic academic core with tailor-made practical applications derived from continuing collaboration with professional and regulatory organisations.
The School has a large group of approximately fifty doctoral students, each with one or two supervisors, spread across all academic areas of the school. DPhil students take between three and four years to complete the DPhil and take either a management or finance route. The School has a well-established executive education business which is core to its activities. Programmes offer individuals and organisations access to innovative teaching, and cutting-edge, internationally-relevant research, and a focus on personal development. The School is highly regarded for the quality of its customised programmes and has an extensive portfolio of open programmes. Within the open programme portfolio, there are several well-established and highly regarded leadership programmes. The School’s faculty play a key role in the design and delivery of these programmes, which are increasingly delivered in international locations. The successful candidate would be expected to make a major contribution to the development and delivery of leadership teaching in Executive Education.
Premises and facilities of the Saïd Business School

The Saïd Business School is one of the most modern, purpose-built business schools in the world, designed by the leading architectural practice, Dixon Jones. Facilities include four state-of-the-art horseshoe style lecture theatres, a 300-seat theatre (opened by Nelson Mandela in 2002) to cater for larger scale lectures and a wealth of social spaces.


A new building has just opened, also designed by Dixon Jones. It will provide additional facilities enabling the School to continue to expand its activities. The School has a second site at Egrove Park, where much of its executive education is currently delivered.

The appointment will be on a RSIV Grade and the starting salary of the successful candidate will be fixed according to experience. The appointment will be subject to a three year probationary period. The appointment of the nominated candidate will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a medical questionnaire.
