BBC In-house Comedy (www.bbc.co.uk/production/comedy) is the biggest producer of comedy in the UK and prides itself on working with the very best in comedy talent - established and new - both on and behind the screen, and is responsible for some of the country's most-watched and loved comedies across radio, online and all four BBC TV channels. In the last few months alone, the department has won 14 prestigious awards including BAFTAs, Rockies, RTS Awards and National Television Awards.
Role Context
The Digital Editor will work closely with the Head of Department, Executive Producers in TV and Radio Comedy and their team of producers to develop, produce, and support BBC3 short-form output, Taster, Feeds, and other digital projects and partnerships.
Purpose of the Role
The role will deliver a coherent, consistent digital experience for our genre, and support the team in all digital efforts. This role requires a strategic thinker who can shape a 3-year plan, and who can support the editorial team in delivering on this strategy. The primary aim of the role is to support and upskill the editorial team as a whole, integrating digital across the department. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to share information and work in partnership, not just to lead but to foster collaboration.
Key Accountabilities
To oversee and formulate the department’s digital strategy, as we look forward to BBC Studios.
To build relationships with executive producers and producers to provide end-to-end collaborations on development opportunities for digital slots.
Responsible for the development of departmental social media output and resourcing, and to integrate our social media presence into our wider-digital offering.
To liaise with stakeholders across the BBC such as BBC Taster, BBC3, iPlayer and the central social media team to align approach on output and offering.
To support executive producers and producers on developing, pitching and producing digital programmes and digital programme elements in line with departmental and network priorities.
To liaise with the executive producer team, the development coordinator and UK Controller of Comedy Production to ensure a departmental awareness of digital opportunities and prospects for business growth in the digital space.
To feed into management of the digital performance of producers and support their annual appraisals with a view to identifying digital training needs in conjunction with the UK Controller of Comedy Production.
To comply all these digital projects prior to transmission, in line with BBC Editorial Guidelines, monitoring production (including quality control) of commissioned digital projects and ensure delivery on schedule and to budget.
To liaise with agencies about new and existing digital and comedy talent.
To contribute to regular content reviews with colleagues and stakeholders to review core online output, contributing to setting targets and supporting the department in meeting them.
To remain abreast of industry trends, digital developments and competitor activity and feed in new thinking.
To work closely with our internal communications and publicity teams, audience research and media engagement and others supporting our digital output.
To evaluate and learn through ensuring appropriate analysis and measurement of digital reach with colleagues in audience research and media engagement teams.

Skills and Experience
Substantial experience in digital production.
Great digital contacts, including agencies & talent in the digital world.
A strong knowledge and perspective on what shares online, and on the major players in digital content production.
Leadership skills.
Ability to deal with talent and develop content tailored to them.
A good knowledge of popular culture and its audience and the ability to convert this knowledge into digital comedy content.
Understanding of a wide variety of the department’s comedy output and audience.
A thorough understanding of BBC Producer guidelines and knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting. Knowledge of BBC policies.
Good communication skills, and demonstrable experience of collaborative projects and roles.
Awareness of the BBC’s Diversity, Fair Selection, and Health and Safety Guidelines.
A working knowledge of budgets and financial monitoring.
Knowledge and experience of multi-media development and production in the commercial market.
