BBC SENIOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME - (IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE CLORE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME)

EXECUTIVE LEVEL PLACEMENT OUTLINE

Division: Television (Project & Change Team)

Supervised by: Director of Television

Location: London

Context:

The Television Project & Change Team works within BBC TV to understand the opportunities and challenges being faced by the division and to support, assure and enable the delivery of solutions needed to keep BBC TV originating great content today and in the future. As ambassadors for change, we align and drive the collective transformation challenges that the Division faces, in pursuit of TV’s objectives.

As of July 2014, these projects include (but subject to change): BBC 3 – transition to an online service1, Digital transformation, Making TV a Better Place to Work (Culture Change), Future Scheduling, Accommodation strategy, Diversity, 2015 programming project, plus potential work coming from decisions about the future of BBC Production2 at corporate level.

PLACEMENT SCOPE:

BBC Television is offering one candidate on the BBC Senior Leadership Programme a placement within the Television Project & Change Team supervised by the Director of Television. The placement holder will have the opportunity to develop senior leadership skills and they will gain experience through a range of short and longer-term training projects, as agreed with the Director of Television. They will experience/shadow the work of TV Board members and will have direct access to them. The various projects will offer an insight into senior management at BBC Television and major project/programme management during a period of significant change for the industry.



THIS plaCEMENT WILL prOVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN HOW A SENIOR LEADER IN THIS DIVISION PERFORMS THEIR ROLE INCLUDING FOR EXAMPLE:

  • communicate a clear vision to the relevant Steering Group/ Management Board and encourage engagement and buy-in. Providing leadership to the project/programme team;

  • define a benefits-led approach to change, allowing for iterative re-planning and with clear objectives, deliverables, timelines and success measures;

  • establish the governance of the project, including structure, approach and assurance, and establishing success criteria and responsibilities with all relevant stakeholders and ensuring Steering Group/Board focus on the delivery of outcomes and benefits;

  • ensure a holistic implementation approach that seeks to embed lasting change (new capabilities, suitable skills) rather than focus solely on the delivery of a solution and consider all elements of change, including business impact, people, behaviours and values; and

  • monitor and oversee the management of risks.

TELEVISION - BBC SenioR LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME COMPETENCIES/PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

  • A keen interest and strong understanding of the television industry;

  • Some understanding of benefits delivery – from strategy to realisation and an understanding of ‘best practice’ in project and programme management, with a focus on practical results rather than process;

  • Experience in stakeholder management;

  • Strategic understanding and the ability to see the wider implications of a problem or opportunity;

  • Ability and/or potential to deal with high degrees of complexity, ambiguity and changes of business focus;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to develop, maintain and enhance relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts;

  • An enquiring mind.
