Context
BBC Global News Ltd (“GNL”) is the commercial arm of the BBC’s global News network and is responsible for BBC World News and BBC.com/news. Broadcasting 24 hours a day and reaching over 385 million homes in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide, BBC World News provides news, business, sport and weather, plus the best of the BBC’s current affairs and documentary programming. BBC.com is one of the most respected brands on the internet and BBC.com/news complements BBC World News in its offering of high quality, up-to-the minute international news, business, sports, weather, and in-depth analysis, attracting 80 million unique visitors around the world each month.
The role provides legal and business affairs advice and support to all aspects of GNL’s business. Key clients include the distribution, sales and marketing, digital and technology, engineering and operations, and editorial teams.
The Role
This is a junior lawyer role reporting to GNL’s Head of Legal & Business Affairs. Working in a team with the HL&BA and 2 senior lawyers you will provide commercial, contractual, and regulatory advice to all parts of the business, particularly in respect of channel distribution, content licensing, and production. You will enjoy a varied workload, working both independently and as part of the team and with colleagues from around the world.
Main duties include assisting in the channel distribution contract workload of the team; liaising with other divisions in GNL, the BBC, BBC Worldwide and external companies, ensuring clear communication and prompt response times and generally facilitating the efficient running of the L&BA team. It requires the ability to make decisions, prioritise a demanding workload effectively and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the company’s objectives through providing accurate, constructive legal and commercial advice.

  • Drafting and negotiation of a variety of standard agreements with clients around the world relating to:

    • licensing of the BBC World News channel, channel blocks and standalone programming ;

    • licensing of short form content to digital clients;

    • content development, production commissioning and acquisition;

    • content sponsorship and advertiser-funded programming;

    • venue hire for marketing events;

    • event sponsorship;

    • audience research and analytics;

    • non-disclosure agreements;

    • other general commercial work.




  • Advise on and ensure compliance with all BBC guidelines and regulatory requirements in all territories in which GNL operates, including but not limited to

    • access services;

    • data protection;

    • prize competitions;

    • advertising, sponsorship and marketing.

  • Ensure contracts management database is kept up to date as negotiations progress.

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients and operational staff and management.

  • Help develop and maintain precedents and processes to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all legal agreements and their proper documentation.

  • Ensure that legal documents and procedures are up to date and comply with all current legislation, regulations and best practice within the legal profession.

  • Work as part of the team and to take the initiative in resolving problems and implementing solutions.

  • Work flexibly and respond to business needs.

  • Develop an understanding of other activity within the BBC’s legal teams and maintain contacts with other lawyers so as to ensure co-ordination of activities, and an improved awareness of GNL’s activities and responsibilities across the BBC.


Skills, knowledge and experience required:


  • The ideal candidate will have excellent academics and a good training contract and shall be a newly- or recently qualified lawyer (NQ+ to 2 years) with strong technical training and drafting experience.

  • Some commercial,IP, and/or media experience in a law firm and/or in-house media company would be desirable.

  • Legal knowledge of contractual and intellectual property rights issues affecting channel distribution; familiarity with the commercial terms of pay TV distribution agreements;

  • Resourceful and works well in a busy environment both as part of a team and individually with minimal supervision;

  • Excellent organisational skills and a capacity to prioritise well;

  • Analytical skills and be a good communicator, with experience of building relationships across a range of people and within a team.

  • Highly motivated, willing to contribute above and beyond the day to day;

  • Positive attitude and an enthusiastic approach.
