General Statement of Research
My research efforts are currently focussed through a PhD, at the University of Bath, ‘Garden as Laboratory in the work of John Evelyn: Baconian intentions and the Hermetic legacy’. This will be submitted in early 2106. I am examining the influence of Evelyn’s natural philosophical ideas on the spaces of his gardens, following the themes of garden as laboratory, as alchemical emblem and as an expression of astrological ideas. As a member of the Architectural History and Theory Group at the WSA I co-organised our successful international conference 'Economy' and co-edited a publication based on papers developed from that event. Current projects include a contribution to the forthcoming book, Perspective as Practice, sponsored by the Centre Alexandre Koyré and Max Plank Institute; and presentation of a paper on John Evelyn’s Elysium Britannicum as a literary manifestation of Francis Bacons’ Salomon’s House form the New Atlantis, at the American Society of Architectural Historian’s annual conference, Pasadena 2016. .
