Organizational Description
The Georgia State Games is one of the largest Amateur Olympic-Style Sports Festivals in the country. We rely HEAVILY on top quality interns to operate many of our sporting Events Projects and Programs. It is a tremendous experience and we had a ton of interns from across the country last year. The interns get a GREAT, HANDS-ON experience. No fetching coffee. Real life planning AND implementation of activities and programs in what they will experience. This is a NOT-FOR-PROFIT experience, much different than any college sports, pro sports or corporate setting being offered to date.
What are the Georgia Games Championships?
The Georgia Games Championships is a statewide Olympic-style sports festival and the events are open to all citizens of Georgia. Every summer over 10,000 athletes compete in 48 sports at more than 50 venues during the months of April through July. To put it all in perspective: the Georgia State Games are larger than the Centennial Summer Olympics that were held in Atlanta in 1996.
Who Developed the Logistics Program?
Retired Air Force Colonel Heinz Johnson created and designed the Logistics system in 1991 and he has operated the Issue Point/ Warehouse since its inception until 2010. Colonel Johnson now lives in San Antonio, Texas and has turned over his operations to be operated by logistical interns.
What is the Georgia Games Logistics Mission?
Logistics is the program for supplying all Sports Venues and Support Services Staff with everything that a sport and venue needs including but not limited to: awards tables, tents, chairs, sports equipment, administrative supplies, signs, banners, awards platforms, T-shirts, drink products, signage, sports supplies and equipment, and Georgia Games property to support the annual competitions. This is the largest State Games sports festival logistics operations in the country.
How does the Logistics Program operate?
An Issue Point/Warehouse complex is established each year to serve as the focal point for supplying equipment and supplies to all venues. This is a professional, well-run operation that is based on a long-standing system of established controls. The program was created in 1991.
All equipment and supplies that are not in position at a venue are delivered to this central location where they are inspected, inventoried, sorted, and distributed. After an event ends, the property is returned to the Issue Point where they are inspected, inventoried, and cleaned and then reissued or packed away for storage.
