March 18, 2016

  • Cloud 901 Showcase and Game Day.  Start your spring break with some fun at the Central Library! This Saturday, check out the Cloud 901 teen learning lab showcase from 12-2 pm followed by Game Day from 3 to 5 pm. More information can be found on the library website. 

  • Tutoring. No after school tutoring today with Ms. Foresythe. 

  • Scholarship.  Senior Male Athletes: The Trey Rich Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a senior male student-athlete that embodies determination, servitude, and dedication exemplifies by Trey Rich: former White Station student-athlete. Criteria is available in the Guidance Complex. Deadline is March 28, 2016.

March 16- 17, 2016

  • JROTC. Congratulations to all the people that participated in the 7th Brigade at Fort Knox, Kentucky this weekend. Our Spartan Battalion took home 3rd place Army color guard, 4th place armed exhibition, 5th place unarmed exhibition, and 4th place academic. More than 50 schools competed. So, be sure to congratulate those who competed.  

  • Graduation Supplies. Attention Seniors! The Balfour Representative will deliver graduation supplies Wednesday, March 30th at 1:15 pm in the auditorium. Bring your balance due to receive graduation supplies. Cash or money orders only! Money orders should be payable to BALFOUR. No personal checks or credit cards will be accepted!

  • Friday on March 18th! Enjoy a night of games, bounce houses, obstacle courses, and much more from 6 to 10 pm. FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED. There will also be LIT music to party to ALL NIGHT LONG. Won't be as big as YOUnified but just as fun! *Located at Bridges Center Downtown.  

  • Softball. Congratulations to our Spartan Softball Team on their win over Melrose last night! Join us at out next home game, Thursday 3/17 vs. Hamilton (not throwing away our shot)! We will have a fun give away! If you are interested in a season pass, they are $25 for students for the whole year! See Mrs. K in M207 this week. 

  • Debate Team. Congratulations to the White Station Debate Teams who were amazing at the City Championships over the weekend. Dominique Malone & John McKissack are your Memphis Debate League City Champions this year and are headed off to the National Championships this April. Brandy Yuan & Nancy Yuan finished 3rd and Becca Folkes-Lallo and Rachel Griffin finished 4th overall. In the Varsity division, Isaiah Oden & Victoria Robinson finished third. Sam Green and Nyla McCranie were also recognized for the Junior Varsity division. Sam Green was ranked 7th among all JV speakers. Victoria Robinson was ranked 8th among all Varsity speakers and Isaiah Oden was awarded Best Varsity Speaker. Becca Folkes Lallo was ranked 12th, John McKissack was ranked 11th, Brandy Yuan was ranked 8th, Nancy Yuan was ranked 4th, and Rachel Griffin was ranked 3rd among all Champions speakers. Dominique Malone was ranked best overall speaker for the Championship. Congratulations teams, and thanks for all of your hard work this year. 

  • HEELing the World One Sole at a Time. The students at White Station High School are partnering with schools throughout Memphis. Our goal is to collect 50,000 pairs of gently used tennis shoes and walking shoes and donate them to Haiti and Nigeria.

  • Sneakfest. Hey, do you want a discount off your Sneakfest ticket? I know a lot of you are planning on going to Sneakfest this Saturday at the Agricenter! If you bring pairs of gently worn walking shoes, you will get $5 off your $20 entry ticket. The shoes you donate will go to Haiti and Nigeria to help children get to school, so please donate your gently worn shoes and get $5 off your entrance ticket. 

  • ACT Practice Books. Attention SENIORS or Juniors, message from Dr. Madu. Anyone who is done with their ACT practice books and would like to donate to other students, please bring them to Dr. Madu's room. Also, just a reminder there is still ACT practice in his room after school EVERY DAY

  • Math Contests. The last math league contest #6 of this year will be on March 15th, which is next Tuesday. 

  • Senior Reports. Seniors: College Application Reports are due to Mrs. Heaston as soon as possible no later than April 18, 2016. If you already know where you are going after high school, i.e. college, military, work; please complete the form located on the Counselors' Website and turn in as soon as possible. EVERY SENIOR MUST COMPLETE THIS FORM. Your final transcript will not be sent without receipt of this form. Scholarship Reports are due to Mrs. Heaston, April 18, 2016 - no exceptions. Scholarship information and award amounts will not be in the commencement program if received after this date. It will be in the report sent to the district but not in the program. This form is also located on the Counselors' website. Remember you must have all the dollar amounts.

  • Cheer Team. Congratulations to your 2016-2017 competitive cheer team: Kelly Valdez, Hayley Armstrong, Candace Vester, Destiny Carter, Abby Holland, Tieler Upchurch, Gabby Hannah, Corea Ross, Jiya Webster, Taylor Jones, Chanell Lewis, Christiann Holmes, Kaleigh McKinnie, Batya Soloman, Kelsey Kellett, Rachel Thomas, Paige Lee, Asiah Alexander, Gabrielle Knight, and Maleah Williams. Alternates: Lyric Vanttooks, Jazz Williams, Isabella Shaw, Mira Millman, and Marissa Cheathem.

  • Do  Re He. Do Re He, White Station's all-male a capella group, will be performing during lunch starting Monday the 14th. If you want to hear twelve talented guys sing music ranging from Ed Sheeran to Stevie Wonder, come to the auditorium during A lunch on Mondays, B lunch on Wednesdays, and C lunch on Fridays. See you there! Admission is $1.

  • Senior Fees. Seniors. We have added ONE additional day to pay Senior Fees, The last date to pay Senior Fees is April 20th during ALL lunches. Senior Fees are $100. Please make sure that you pay the dues on this date as this will be the last date that Traditions will come to our school to collect the fees. Again, April 20th is the day to pay senior fees if you have not already paid. Please make arrangements to pay on this date.

  • TN State University Alumni Scholarship. The Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee State University National Alumni Association has two $1,000 scholarships for Memphis high school seniors who have been accepted to Tennessee State University as freshmen for the 2016-2017 academic year. Students who are interested in applying for the scholarship must submit the application by April 15, 2016. Applications are available in the guidance complex. 

  • TMTA. Attention please! There will be a TMTA Tryout for Calculus in Mrs. Campbell's Room and Pre-Calculus in Mrs. Cui's Room. It will be tomorrow afternoon after school at 2:30 pm and it will last 80 minutes

  • Chess Club. Monday after school, the Chess Club will meet in Mr. Pentecost's room (M239) for a club picture. Thank you!

  • TED-Ed Club. Hey, TED-Ed club members. We're meeting Tuesday after school for an hour in the library. Come ready to work on your presentation and have great discussions! See you there!

  • DECA. A big Spartan Shout out to the students who competed at DECA State in Nashville, and have advanced to DECA Nationals coming up the end of April. When you see these students, congratulate them on their success. 

March 7, 2016

  • Robotics. Robot team members, go to Ms. Agee's room to get your new t shirts after school.

  • AP Computer Science. If you are applying for AP Computer Science A - the programming course - come to Ms. Agee's room to take a short pretest on Tuesday, March 15 at 2:30.

  • Scribbler. Attention all photographers, artists, poets, writers, and creators of prose. Submit your works to White Station's Art and Literary Magazine, The Scribbler. We need tour work to make the magazine this year, so send your contribution to whitestationscribbler@gmail.com by March 20.

  • Student Exchange. How is life and school in Germany? What is student exchange? Come to Room E204 next Monday, March 7 from 2:30 to 3:00 to find out!

  • Black History Program. All participants in the Black History Program: there is a full rehearsal Friday and Monday afterschool in the auditorium from 2:30 to 4:30.

  • Cheer Team. 1) Anyone interested in cheer (competitive or noncompetitive) there is a parent meeting 3/2 at 6 pm in the cafeteria. 2) Competitive cheer tryouts are next week Tuesday-Thursday after school! 

  • Scribbler. Are you talented, but have nowhere to publish your work? Hit up the Scribbler, White Station's Literary Magazine! Send in photography, poetry, short stories, Youtube videos of your performances, or any creation that you spawn. Submit them to whitestationscribbler@gmail.com by March 20th to be in the magazine and let your creation flourish!

  • Memphis Virtual School Classes. The drop date for Semester 2 courses is March 27, 2016. On this date, students must have reached at least 42%. This includes both Credit Recovery and Online Courses. Please contact Mrs. Heaston is you have any questions or concerns. 

  • Alliance Club. Join us for an Alliance meeting on Thursday at 2:25 in room M140. We will be discussing the achievements and struggles of women internationally. 

  • Tutoring. Mrs. Forsythe's Thursday tutoring is cancelled. It will pick back up at regular time next Thursday, 3/10/16.

  • Quiz Bowl Pics. The yearbook picture for the Quiz Bowl team will be taken Friday afternoon at 2:30 in Room E201.

  • Foreign Language Fair Culture Bowl. Tryouts for the University of Memphis Foreign Language Fair Culture Bowl will be held this Friday in Mr. Insch's room, E201 at 2:45 pm.

  • Spirit Night: FBLA. PLEASE SUPPORT FBLA's Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A at 4916 Poplar Ave. this Thursday, March 3rd from 3pm until 8pm. Be sure to mention FBLA: White Station High School, when you place an order. 

  • Debate Club. Attention debaters, there will not be debate practice today due to AP night and the election. Practice will resume on Thursday. Thanks, Rakestraw.

  • ROTC. February has been a good month for the Spartan Battalion. Brody McDonald received his admission letter to the Naval Academy. Cadets won seven of the sixteen available slots on the annual SCS Awards and Promotion Board. The Spartan Battalion Academic Team was the only SCS team and one of two teams in the state to win their way to the third round of the Junior ROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl. The team will compete against the other twenty three teams from across the nation in June for the national championship. This weekend at the Annual Spring Drill Meet, the Spartan Battalion took first overall in the Armed Division, second overall in the Unarmed Division and Inspection, Third in Color Guard, and Karla Cepeda took first place individual drill. A sincere thank to goes out to the faculty administration for supporting us. -SFC Royce E. Myers.

  • Lady Spartan Basketball. The Lady Spartan Basketball Team would like to thanks all the fans and supporters who came out to the game Friday night and cheered them on to victory as they defeated the Germantown Red Devils. Now we need you again as we take on the Overton Wolverines at Hamilton High School. Game time is 7:30. If you enjoyed Friday night's game, you will definitely enjoy tonight. So, come out and show your Spartan pride and cheer the team to victory.

  • Yearbook. ATTENTION SENIORS! If you are in the top 20 and have not sent in your picture for the Yearbook, you must do that ASAP if you want your picture to be included. The FINAL deadline is this Friday so email those pictures to WSHSshield@gmail.com Thanks!

  • Science Olympiad. Congrats to both Spartan Science Olympiad teams for their 1st and 2nd place finishes at the CBU Regional Tournament Saturday. Great job and now on to Knoxville for the state tournament April 9. Way to go Spartans!

  • Missing Item. A forest green backpack was taken from in front of the school yesterday. There is a reward for its return. Please return the backpack to the main office as soon as possible.

  • Scholarship Essay Opportunity. There is a scholarship essay opportunity sponsored by Regions Bank. Hurry!! Deadline is Thursday, Feb 25, 2016. 16 Seniors will win a $5000 scholarship. 16 underclassmen will win a $3500 scholarship. (16 COLLEGE Freshman, Sophomores, or Juniors). IF interested: Stop by the main office and pick up an information card off the counter. See Mrs. Newton Burns in room M109. Or, visit regions.com/ridingforward.

  • AP Music Theory. The AP Music Theory Entrance Exam will be given on March 8th at 2:30 in the band room. All inquiries, please see Mr. Sims.

  • St. Jude Club Spirit Night. The St. Jude Club is having a spirit night at the Chick-Fil-A on Poplar from 3-8 pm this Thursday, February 25!! Be sure to say that you are from White Station to make your purchase count! We need all the support we can get!

  • Girls Basketball: Congrats. Congratulations to the White Station Girls' Basketball Team for making it to the Regional playoffs. Now, they need your support. This school has over 2000 students enrolled and over 100 faculty and staff. We are quite sure we can get at least 400 to come out Friday night to cheer them to victory. If you have not seen them play this year, you have missed out on an exciting time. So, come out to Germantown High School Friday Night, February 26th, and do your part. Become a Lady Spartan Fan, they need your support. The game is at 7:00 and the ticket price will be no more than $8.

  • College Visit. We are excited to announce that MTSU will be here February 25 at 11:00. Army ROTC Scholarship Information will be March 1, at 9:10 and Lincoln College of Technology will be March 2 at 9:10. Juniors are highly encouraged to attend this visit. Please sign up in the guidance complex and obtain a permission slip from your English Teacher.

  • Summer Programs. Students, UTK Engineering has 5 awesome summer programs for 9-12 grades. If you are interested, visit the counselors office or go to http://www.engr.utk.edu/diversity/pre-college/ Applications are due soon. 

  • -Also, the Memphis Bar Association Diversity Committee is now accepting applications for their Summer Law Internship. If you are interested, pick up an applications from Mrs. Brown-Malone, the counselor, or visit the counselors' website. 

  • -Every summer, 25 students are invited to Princeton'c campus for an intensive, 10 day journalism camp. The program's goal is to encourage students to pursue careers in journalism. All expenses are paid. The application can be found at www.princeton.edu/sjp and is due Friday, February 26, 2016. If you have questions, contact Mrs. Brown-Malone, the counselor. 

  • -Want to be a veterinarian? The University of Tennessee Veterinary Summer Experience Program seeks to provide worthwhile opportunities for high school students interested in veterinary medicine. Applications are due March 11th. If you are interested, visit the counselors' website or counselors' office.

  • AP English (Updated). Applicants for the 2016-2017 AP English courses are required to complete Writing Samples. Rising juniors applying for AP English Language will meet Mrs. Alsobrook in the cafeteria immediately after school, Wednesday, March 2.  Rising seniors applying for AP Literature will meet Mrs. Douglas in the cafeteria immediately after school, Thursday, March 3. Arrive promptly, bring blue or black pens, and plan to stay one hour. Students having conflicts (and they better be good!) should see respective teachers after school prior to these dates.

  • Tennis. All players that tried out for tennis should drop by room M018 in the basement to pick up important info. Don't forget practice is at 2:30 today at Wolbrecht Tennis Center.

  • Yearbook. Attention Spartans! The last day to purchase a yearbook is Tuesday, March 1st and there are only 100 copies left. Order yours at balfour.com today!

  • Pan African Club. There is a meeting today from 2:20 to 3:00 in Room F222. 

  • AP English Applicants. Applicants for the 2015-2016 AP English courses are required to complete writing samples. Rising juniors applying for AP English Language will meet Mrs. Alsobrook in the cafeteria immediately after school, Tuesday March 2. Rising seniors applying for AP Literature will meet Ms. Douglas in the cafeteria immediately after school, March 4. Arrive promptly, bring black pens, and plan to stay for one hour. Students having conflicts (and they better be good!) should see the respective teachers after school prior to these dates.

  • University of MS Leadership Class. If you are a senior and have been accepted and plan to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall, please see Mrs. Heaston.

  • Junior vs. Senior Dodge Ball. The Junior and Senior Class Officers present Junior vs. Senior Dodgeball Game. This will be next Friday, February 26th at 3 pm after school in the Senior Gym. There will be a student sign up sheet at all lunches for JUNIORS AND SENIORS to sign up to participate. Each student that signs up to participate MUST RETURN a parent signed liability form that will be given when he or she signs up. ALL students are welcomed to attend but there will be a certain amount that will be able to participate.

  • Knowledge Bowl - Congrats. Last Thursday night, the White Station Knowledge Bowl Team defeated Houston High School 420 to 275 and will advance to the Final Four of the WREG Knowledge Bowl. Congratulations, Spartans.

  • Key of She - Congrats. Congratulations to Key of She, the premier a capella group for winning the South Regional International Champions of High School A Capella in Georgia. They now qualify to compete in finals in New York in April.

  • Prom. Prom is April 9th. Prom Tickets are $45 each. Prom tickets will go on sale March 14 - March 18. The theme for the prom is Passport to Paris. This year the prom will be at Minglewood Hall. Only Seniors will be able to buy tickets March 14, 15, 16 and then juniors will be able to start purchasing tickets on March 17th. There are a limited amount of tickets due to venue space so Seniors are encouraged to buy their tickets during Senior Only sale dates to secure a ticket. Once purchased, tickets cannot be resold or given away without prior permission from Administration. In order to purchase a ticket, students must have a Prom Guidelines sheet signed by a parent/guardian. Prom Guideline sheets can be picked up in the Student Support Office.

  • AABE Scholarships. The Tennessee Chapter of AABE, American Association of Blacks in Energy, will award up to $5,000 in scholarships to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners respectively. Winners demonstrate the most outstanding achievement and promise. Applications are due March 4. You may pick up an application in the counselors office.

  • Lacrosse. Come watch junior co-captain Caroline Williams play for your Lady Spartans lacrosse team this Thursday at Houston at 5.

  • Lacrosse. Come support your Lady Spartans lacrosse team as sophomore Sydney Jones plays in the goal TONIGHT at Briarcrest at 5.

  • College Visit. We are excited to announce that MTSU will be here February 25 at 11:00. Juniors are highly encouraged to attend this visit. Please sign up in the guidance complex and obtain a permission slip from your English teacher.

  • Mock Trial. Congratulations to our awesome Mighty Spartan Mock Trial Team in their city championship win over St. Mary's! This is a huge win for this team which has held 2nd since 2011! Wish them luck on their way to the state competition in March.

  • Online Classes. The Library, the computers, and a helpful librarian will be available this Saturday from 9-12 for students to work on online classes. Please come and work on your class!

  • Lacrosse. Come see Junior co-captain Phoebe Anderson take the first draw of the season for the Lady Spartans Lacrosse team tomorrow night at 5 at Briarcrest.

  • Bridges. Students, if you are looking for a summer program that unites and inspires diverse young people to become confident and courageous leaders committed to community transformation, the Bridge Builders is just what you're looking for. Pick up an application in the counselor's suite. Or apply online at bridgesusa.org/apply. A Bridges representative will be in the cafeteria during all lunches this Friday to explain more about Bridges and pick up applications.

  • Scribbler. Want to spend a night under the stars? Maybe not, since it's freezing outside? Don't worry! The White Station Scribbler, the school's literary magazine, is hosting a "Scribbler's Guide to the Galaxy" coffeehouse on Friday the 19th from 6 to 9 pm in the auditorium, so you can enjoy all the wonders of space and beyond with a cup of cocoa and good vibes to guide you! Bring $5 for admission and a friend for a good time :)

  • AMC 10/12 B Math Competition. AMC 10B / 12B will take place from 8:30 am - 9:45 am in E100, Mr. Jennemann's Room (like last time). Please plan accordingly and come on time. 

  • TN Promise Students. The TN Promise FAFSA filing deadline has been extended to February 22, 2016. If you have not filed your 2016-2017 FAFSA, you must do so by 11:59 pm CT on February 22, 2016 to remain TN Promise eligible. The 2016 - 2017 Free Application for Federal Student Aid must be filed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Failure to complete your 2016 -2017 FAFSA by February 22, 2016 will result in the loss of your TN Promise scholarship eligibility.

  • Lacrosse. Come support senior captain Caitlin Lloyd as she leads the Lady Spartans lacrosse team at their very first game of the season, this Friday at 5 o' clock at Briarcrest.

  • St. Jude Club. There will be Yearbook pictures for the St. Jude Club after school THIS THURSDAY in the library. Wear your St. Jude Club shirt if you have one. Please be there right after school.
