March of the Living/Multicultural Track (2005) I travelled to Poland with forty other Canadian student leaders to experience Holocaust history and learn about the vital importance of tolerance and diversity. It was the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Death Camp where we met the Polish President and Israeli President Ariel Sharon.
Department of Politics and International Studies, SOAS, Research Assistant (Present) Under the supervision of Dr. Fiona Adamson, I am responsible principally for conducting advanced academic research on diasporas and civil wars for the purposes of compiling papers and a book.
Halifax Regional Municipality, Legislative Assistant (2012-present) Managing committees of Council, Regional Council, providing procedural and legislative advice to senior staff and Councillors.
Campaign to Elect Thomas Mulcair Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, Senior Organizer (2011-2012). I was responsible for organizing in southern Ontario, fundraising, and providing convention weekend support.
City of Toronto, City Clerk’s Office, Council and Support Services, Senior Policy Analyst (2010-2012) Responsible for several long-term projects including the City of Toronto's continuity of government plan, the institutional writing and collection of City Clerk's Office policies and procedures, as well as a number of other special projects.
City of Toronto, City Clerk’s Office, Elections Services: Research Associate (May 2009-2010) I was responsible for independently researching a variety of policy issues, including electoral identification policy, and accessibility. I was also responsible for designing the youth outreach strategy for the 2010 Toronto election, which included graphic and message design, along with stakeholder consultations. I was responsible for writing reports for City Council, as well as preparing briefing notes.
University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus (2009) – I was a Teaching Assistant for The Politics of Canadian Health Policy; a third-year, qualitative social sciences course. I was responsible for leading a one hour tutorial once per week as well as grading papers and responding to students’ concerns.
Constituency Office of Peter Stoffer, MP (2007-2008) – I was responsible for all of Mr. Stoffer’s casework, including addressing constituent issues related to passports, citizenship and immigration, income tax and a variety of other issues. I was also at times responsible for media and press relations as well as correspondence and prepared remarks.
Constituency Office of Alexa McDonough, MP (2006-2007) – I worked on many projects related to the media, community outreach, support, and case work; answering emails, letters, telephones and filing. I also staffed Ms. McDonough at media opportunities and represented her at community events. I was responsible for working on E-Newsletters, constituency mail-outs, speeches and event remarks. I organized press conferences and meetings with interest groups for visiting Members of Parliament, including then NDP Leader Jack Layton.
Dalhousie Student Union Communications Director (2004-2005) – I Updated the Dalhousie Student Union’s website; created a mass communications strategy for over 200 societies; disciplined delinquent societies and worked to increase student involvement.
Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia (2002) – I was responsible for the composition of formal correspondence for the office including speeches for Vice Regal and Provincial occasions, writing letters to community groups and educational materials for the office. I also updated the office’s website using Dreamweaver.
Community and National Leadership__________________________
Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee, Partisan Bloggers Series (2011-present) Along with a Liberal and Conservative, I have contributed to a series of blogs discussing contemporary issues in Canadian politics.
Everest: Global Leaders Seminar Series and Simulation, University of Toronto (2010) I convened an inter-school speaker series and simulation for the School of Public Policy and Governance and the Munk Centre for International Studies to build the international negotiation skills of interested students.
Habitat for Humanity, University of Toronto (2010) I initiated a Habitat for Humanity build project for students at the School of Public Policy and Governance.
Massey College, University of Toronto (2010) I initiated a small speakers series, “Survivor’s Stories”, where the Fellowship of the college was invited to hear the stories of three genocide Survivors. I also sat on the Environmental Committee at Massey College.
The Canadian Centre for Diversity (2008) I was responsible for laying the groundwork for the Discovering Diversity Schools Program in Halifax. A program seeking to educate high school students about the importance of diversity through learning about different cultures and religious institutions by visiting them.
Fusion Halifax (2008) I was an active, founding member of this new, innovative network for young professionals in Halifax that seeks to inspire change in several important facets of the Halifax community. I was the secretary and programming chair of the Diversity and Immigration Action Team.
SHOUT (2005-2007) Founder and first National Chair of this organization which promotes tolerance and fights discrimination in Canada through education about genocide and acts of intolerance. We have youth representatives in over ten Canadian cities organizing events in their communities to further these important goals. My duties included working with multiple partner organizations at the student and professional level; working with project donors; creating communications strategies for a variety of persons and events, working on the website and developing a student journal. Under new leadership, SHOUT now organizes missions for university students to tour sites of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Halifax Holocaust Education Week Committee (2005-2008) Working through the Atlantic Jewish Council, I helped to organize memorials and educational programs like the Nova Scotia Dignity Day ceremony, which was mentioned in the provincial legislature and the Yom HaShoah ceremony, which had its largest attendance ever of over one thousand people in 2008.
Shinerma National Committee (2004-2007) I was on the national organizing board for Shinerama, Canada’s largest student fundraising campaign, and acted as a coordinator for our national conference as well as a discussion director and seminar leader. The Shinerama campaign is the largest Canadian fundraising campaign fighting cystic fibrosis.
Dalhousie University/Dalhousie Student Union (2002-2005) I was an Orientation Leader; the Orientation Week committee member of the year; Dalhousie Student Union Volunteer of the Year and I organized many events for the Dalhousie Student Union over four years, including the 2004 Shinerama campaign, an MS fundraiser, and many other events. I also sat on the Diversity Council for two years.
The Sigma Chi Fraternity (2001-2005) Held the positions of President and Vice President among many others; I received awards for Brother of the Year and Top Graduate of the year in 2005; I have also attended the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop and organized our annual Province Conference.
IWK Children’s Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network (2001-2005) I chaired several fundraising campaigns and raised more than $5000 over four years for this hospital, which is the most important children’s hospital in Atlantic Canada. I have volunteered for over four years for many events and fundraisers for the hospital.
Dalhousie University Stage Society (2001-2003) I was one of the founding members of this amateur stage group for Dalhousie University students. I played supporting actor roles in several productions.

Godwin, Matthew K. “Rising to the Challenge: A Time of Crisis and the Tobin Tax.” Public Policy and Governance Review. 1 (1) (2009), online. This was the inaugural issue of a graduate student journal of the School of Public Policy and Governance, University of Toronto.
Children of Atlas (2011) Completed an original novel of literary fiction, totalling 184 pages. The novel discusses themes such as climate change, generational inheritance and responsibility, salvation through multiple faiths and intermarriage. The novel is set at a fictitious college at the University of Toronto and in Ontario's Muskoka region.
Godwin, Matthew K. “Integration or Assimilation: The Erosion of Identity Structures of Ethiopian Jews in Israel” (2009) was presented at the Israel/Palestine in Perspective conference held in Toronto, Ontario, which was cosponsored by the Munk School for International Studies and the Israel Young Scholars Network.
University of Toronto, School of Public Policy and Governance (2009) My paper on the implementation of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program was added to the syllabus for the 2010 course on policy implementation at the School of Public Policy and Governance.
University of Toronto,School of Public Policy and Governance (2008) Co-authored a report on the health benefits of municipal parks for the Department of Parks and Recreation, City of Mississauga.

Trinity-Spadina Federal NDP Riding Association Executive (2010-2012) I was an elected executive member, holding the position of Membership Officer.
Trinity-Spadina Olivia Chow Re-Election (2011)I put up signs, scrutineered the vote, canvassed and performed other duties during the 2011 federal election.
Vancouver 2011 NDP Convention (2011) Attended and debated in various policy sessions including the foreign policy panel, among others.
Halifax 2009 NDP Convention (2009) Participated in the NDP’s biannual federal convention as a delegate and lobbyist.
Alexa McDonough Re-Election Campaign/Alan Hill for Halifax West (2006 Federal Election) I was involved in outdoor canvassing, outdoor srcutineering and indoor scrutineering; and also recruiting volunteers.
Quebec 2006 NDP Convention (Sept. 2006) Participated in the ‘Reclaiming Canada’s Place in the World’ roundtable as well as plenary sessions and showcases.
