Fifty years after her death, Piaf remains an inspiration to many. Pigalle retells some of the extraordinary story, from the early days of poverty in Paris slums to the high life of worldwide fame and notoriety. Gypsy Swing, or Jazz Manouche in French, was born in Paris in the 1930s when guitarist Django Reinhardt formed the Quintette du Hot Club de France. For the first time Swing was being played solely with stringed instruments: guitar, violin and double-bass. Gypsy Swing, which has always been popular in Europe, has had an international revival; and has featured in movies such as Midnight in Paris and Sweet and Lowdown.Robert Stuka and Nicolas Deschatrettes met in Belfast and, having a passion for Django Reinhardt’s music, they formed the guitar duo Manouche. They have since developed their unique style mixing American swing, French popular music and Eastern European traditional Gypsy music and delighted audiences from Belfast to London. Ladies’ Choir Date: Sat 22 Feb Time: 8pm Cost: £10 As Long As We Have Music Lisburn Harmony Ladies’ Choir was formed in September 2010 with expectations of achieving 25 members. It was soon clear that there were many more talented and keen Lisburn ladies wanting to sing, and now the main choir’s membership is 80, with a waiting list! Whilst the choir has an open access approach with no auditions, the choral experience of the members is wide and varied, and a ‘wee choir’ was formed to cater for those with more vocal experience or who wanted more of a challenge. This choir is Harmony Too. Harmony Too, festival winners at Portadown and the prestigious Bangor International Choral Festival Ladies’ Class, consists of around 16 voices, singing a variety of genres for a range of events. Appearances have included singing at Thiepval Barracks, at Stormont, charity concerts, and with a choir in Monaghan for a Peace People concert. The emphasis for the choir is on the fun, the members love what they do and it shows. Let them entertain you with the music they love to sing. Graffitti Classics pushes the elitist boundaries of the traditional string quartet with its hilarious all-singing, all-dancing, musical comedy show. It’s a classical concert, gypsy-folk romp, opera, stand-up comedy and a brilliant dance show all rolled into one! Graffiti Classics never fails to get audiences laughing, clapping and singing along. Designed by Simon Kenny Kath and her elderly father, Kemp, live in a house on the outskirts of a rubbish dump. Their drab existence is interrupted by the arrival of a new lodger, the enigmatic Mr Sloane. Provocative and sexually ambiguous, Sloane soon has both Kath and her brother Ed competing for his favours. But all is not as it seems. Behind Sloane’s nonchalant demeanour lies a calculating psychopath with a dark and secretive past. Seduction, blackmail and murder lie waiting in the wings. ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ was first staged at the Arts Theatre in London in 1964, winning the London Critics’ Variety Award for Best Play of the Year. Its unique blend of farce and black comedy beautifully captures the suppressed desires of the period. Orton’s plays include Loot, The Erpingham Camp, The Ruffian on the Stair and What the Butler Saw. With thirty critically-acclaimed productions since their touring debut in April 2000, London Classic Theatre has established a reputation for producing bold, imaginative theatre of the highest quality. This revival of its 2003 production of the play celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Orton’s classic black comedy. His distinctive guitar style has been acclaimed as world class and has led to him being referred to as a Blues Guitar Legend. Ronnie regularly collaborates with the finest musicians in the country. Playing host at ISLAND Music Club, Ronnie draws from his vast network of musicians to bring us a special evening of blues and jazz based music. Appearing with Ronnie Greer are Linley Hamilton on the trumpet and Scott Flanigan on piano. Linley Hamilton, a stalwart of the Irish jazz scene and BBC Radio Ulster presenter, released two albums last year, ‘Taylor Made’ with his critically acclaimed Dublin based quartet of Johnny Taylor, Dan Bodwell and Dominic Mullen and an album with Gay McIntyre called ‘The Music Within Me’. Scott Flanigan, a pianist of some renown, has worked extensively throughout Ireland, often with Dublin vocalist Kevin Morrow and Belfast saxophonist David Howell. He writes his own compositions and is in high demand as a jazz pianist. Ulster Orchestra A Trip Down The Rhine Date: Sat 29 Mar Time: 8pm Cost: £14/£12 con Venue: ISLAND Hall Conducted by JoAnn Falletta Brahms Variations on a theme of Haydn Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Schumann Symphony No.3 Rhenish JoAnn Falletta, the effervescent Principal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra, will be our guide through some of the ‘classics’ of German orchestral repertoire. A trip down the Rhine, as depicted by Robert Schumann in his Third Symphony, the Rhenish, is music of great colour and drama, while Schumann’s protégé, Johannes Brahms, provides a virtuosic set of variations, by turns lavish, reflective and mischievous. One of the most popular and best-loved of all violin concertos, Mendelssohn’s, will form the centrepiece of the show with Ulster Orchestra Leader Tamás Kocsis as soloist. ‘Mendelssohn never loses your interest’, “This programme is truly wonderful stuff” says Kocsis. An evening of musical delight awaits, to please both established fans and those new to classical music. Early booking is advisable. Set in the context of the struggle for women to have the vote in the first half of the twentieth century, Emily resonates with questions that still challenge the world today: repression of public resonates with questions that still challenge the world today: repression of public protest, democracy, militancy, torture, women’s rights and self-sacrifice. Take an hour long journey through some of Heaney’s most popular and much-loved poetry. The event will include readings by poets Kate Newmann and Frank Ormsby along with footage of Seamus Heaney reading his poetry. Kate Newmann’s first collection of poetry, “The Blind Woman in the Blue House”, was published in 2001 and a joint collection with Joan Newmann, “Belongings”, was produced by Arlen Press in 2007. Her most recent collection, “I Am a Horse”, was published to critical acclaim in 2011. Among her awards are the Allingham Poetry Prize, the Swansea Roundyhouse Poetry Competition and the Listowel Poetry Prize.

The brutal reality of the trenches is contrasted with the lives of the women they leave behind, highlighting the social changes the harsh impact of war brings about. The Glass Umbrella Theatre Company is an innovative student led company from South Eastern Regional College’s Performing Arts Department. Founded in 2011, the company was set up to give young people the opportunity to work on full scale productions in a variety of roles, from technical and stage crew to acting on stage. His distinctive guitar style has been acclaimed as world class and has led to him being referred to as a Blues Guitar Legend. Ronnie regularly collaborates with the finest musicians in the country. Playing host at ISLAND Music Club, Ronnie draws from his vast network of musicians to bring us a special evening of blues and jazz based music. Appearing with Ronnie Greer are Meilana Gillard on saxophone, Scott Flanigan on piano and Steve Davis on drums. American saxophonist Meilana Gillard, now resident in N. Ireland, has led a succession of her own groups and performed with a diverse array of artists such as Johnny Mathis, Charlie Persip, Joan Osborne, Lauren Sevian, Mary Wilson, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Lou Rawls, and Greg Osby. Now she’s co-produced (with Osby, on his new label) ‘Day One’, a solo debut showcasing her skills as tenor saxophonist and composer with both discipline and swing. Scott Flanigan, a pianist of some renown, has worked extensively throughout Ireland, often with Dublin vocalist Kevin Morrow and Belfast saxophonist David Howell. He writes his own compositions and is in high demand as a jazz pianist. Steve ‘Dakiz’ Davis is a professional percussionist and composer. He studied at the Skidmore Jazz Institute in New York. Living in London for the last three years he has been playing drums with the cream of London’s jazz community, such as Evan Parker, Django Bates, Julian Siegal, and Dylan Bates.
