MUSICAL ARTS YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Board of Directors • Orientation Packet

MAYO is a project under the umbrella of the Southern Indiana Youth Symphony, Inc. 35-21266 (Federal Tax Id#)

KEY AREAS

MISSION

The mission of the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra is to provide musical training to a wide array of students of all levels and backgrounds, to promote excellence while fostering individual development, and to prepare students not just as musicians but as community members.

VISIONS & VALUES

The Musical Arts Youth Orchestra is a youth music training organization. Currently, MAYO offers symphony, jazz and chamber ensembles to several counties including Monroe, Owen, Morgan, Johnson, Brown, Lawrence, Greene, and Vigo.

Membership ranges in age from about 8 to 19. MAYO has always embraced the use of peer-to-peer coaching and utilizes the talent from the IU School of Music as well as community professionals. Auditions held for the organization are typically “placement” auditions.

MAYO is open to any student who wishes to experience MAYO. Accommodations are made for all students regardless of skill level or financial ability to pay.

MAYO wishes not only to offer quality concerts in different genres, but also to help educate the community in the value of musical training.

We elect to cooperate and partner with as many organizations as is feasible.

We wish to serve the underserved population in fiscally responsibly ways. Currently, we collect instruments to help students who cannot afford to rent or buy, we provide free string training to girls and boys at the Girls and Boys Club of Bloomington, and we provide financial aid to nearly 40% of our student population.

HISTORY

MAYO is a project of the Southern Indiana Youth Symphony, Inc., which was founded in December, 1999 (2000) by Kristen Bellisario. The youth symphony emerged as an education project from the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra when Bellisario served as Education Director. The Southern Indiana Youth Symphony became incorporated in 1999 and received federal non-profit status in 2000.

The founding music director of the group was James Johnston, then serving as assistant conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Johnston was followed by Carl Kling, currently director of bands at Northwest Missouri State University, and by Kelly Corcoran, currently assistant conductor of the Nashville (TN) Symphony.

The MAYO project began in the 2003-2004 season, with Darko Butorac as music director, currently music director of the Missoula (MT) Symphony. Thomas Loewenheim served as the MAYO music director for seasons 2004-05 to 2006-07. He initiated the iMAYO International Youth Orchestra Festival bringing students from Hong Kong, Israel, France, and Germany to rehearse and perform with the MAYO orchestra. With Dr. Loewenheim's departure for a professorship at Fresno State in 2007, violinist/conductor Jose Valencia stepped in as MAYO Music Director. Mr. Valencia is also the music director of the Kokomo (IN) Symphony and the innovative Orkestra Projekt, in Indianapolis. His special project has included the start of secondary orchestras, Sinfonia and Concertina.

Create and continually reshape the mission of the organization.

Develop goals that will move the organization toward its mission.
