Involvement in projects

CELEBRATION 2000 (May 2000 – November 2002)
The second in a series of large international 3D refraction experiments which targeted the lithospheric structure of Europe (e.g. http://www.geologicacarpathica.sk/special /C/Celebration_Guterch.pdf). My duties included selecting locations for 25 seismic recorders and to deploy them. Further on, my master thesis focused on initial processing of the data subset from the Eastern Alps.

Rechnitz 2001 (June 2001)

Selection of locations and deployment of 15 seismic recorders for registration of wide-angle data during deep crustal reflection profiling. Programming of the instruments, data retrieval and archiving.

ALP 2002 (January 2002 – May 2006)

An international 3D refraction seismic experiment with focus on the Eastern Alps, lead by Austria (Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics, Vienna University of Technology) (www.alp2002.info). My duties within this project were wide-spread and included:

  • Carrying out research for the project proposal

  • Design and initial selection of locations for 500 seismic recorders

  • Planning of logistics

  • Contact person fort the international cooperation

  • Instruction of slowenian and croatian teams

  • Deployment of 20 recorders

  • Data archiving and initial data processing (geometry assignment) of approximately 30,000 seismic traces

  • Development of a new processing methods for 3D WAR/R data based on stacking in the time domain

  • Generation of a 3D seismic model of the Eastern Alps with special focus on the questions of reliability, accuracy and resolution (Ph.D. thesis)

SUDETES 2003 (June 2003)

A 3D refraction seismic experiment focusing on the lithosphere of the Bohemian Massif (http://www.ig.cas.cz/activities/Sudetes.php). My tasks were programming 30 seismic stations for the area of the Slovak Republic, instructing the teams, data retrieval and archiving.

Impacts of glacier and climate change on alpinism (September 2004 – September 2005)

During my alternative military service, I worked for the Central Institute for Meteorology & Geodynamics on a study of the implications of climate, glacier and permafrost change onto mountaineering.

GPR on glaciers (May 2004 – June 2005)

Different projects to investigate glacier thickness in the Austrian Alps (Sonnblick, Pasterze). Cooperation with the Central Institute for Meteorology & Geodynamics.

Research on ice caves (2006 - 2010)

Determination of ice thicknesses in alpine caves by GPR as basis for monitoring programs. Cooperation by several institutions, initiated and lead by the University of Innsbruck. Organization of an international conference devoted to ice cave research.

GPR in karst environments & 3D structural modeling of normal faults (since 2005)

Cooperation with University of Vienna and Vienna Waterworks. Delineating carst cavities and research on the epi-karst zone with GPR. Use of GPR to derive information on sedimentary thickness.

Schools on Ice (January 2007 – April 2009)

This cooperation with GIScience (University of Salzburg, Austrian Academy of Sciences) was launched within the FERMAP initiative as an Austrian contribution to the IPY 2007-2008. Our project aimed at introducing pupils and students to processes within and research on the cryosphere (http://www.schoolsonice.oeaw.ac.at).

ALPASS (May 2008 – July 2010)

ALPASS was an international large-scale passive seismic monitoring experiment with focus on teleseismic tomography to reveal the upper mantle structure of the Eastern Alps (http://info.tuwien.ac.at/geophysik/alpass.htm). I worked on teleseismic tomography and receiver function analyses.

La Barge seismic interferometry (since August 2010)

This research focuses on seismic interferometry applied to a data set acquired within the US Array initiative. Broadband data were recorded on 55 3-C stations for 7 months in the La Barge basin (Wyoming). I aim at obtaining surface and body waves from local and regional noise sources, and subsequently at the generation of a sub-surface model.
