PAR ( Precision Approach Radar ) Approaches
PAR approaches are Ground controlled approaches ( GCA ), this type of service is radar guided approach provided by military air traffic controller to guide aircraft to a safe approach in adverse weather conditions.
Precision approach radar ( PAR ) is a type of radar guidance system designed to provide lateral and vertical guidance to an aircraft pilot for landing. At DH a missed approach must be initiated if the required visual reference to continue the approach for landing has not been acquired. The PAR guidance is similar to an instrument landing system ( ILS), but requires verbal control instructions.
A PAR approach must be executed according to the SOP of a 3D approach ( with verbal guidance from ACC) and therefore the 50ft increment to the minima is not required.
PAR approaches should be flown with the autopilot.
The controller normally vectors the aircraft onto final approach course and give then
heading directions to maintain on the runway center line, and information on proximity to the glide path to allow crews to make timely adjustments to the rate of descent. Crew normally is advised not to acknowledge such instructions unless requested.
During any PAR approach the controller will ask to “carry out cockpit checks , advise complete” before directed to turn to base leg and “ check gear, acknowledge” after established on the final track. Crew confirmation is required after completion of these checks.
If missed approach instructions are not received prior to intercepting the final track ask for “ missed approach instructions”
Upon approaching the glide path, there will be the command to start descent and thereafter information if on, above or below GS, but there will be NO specific rate of descent instructions. Adjustments must be done according to pilots ’s discretion to follow the glide slope down to minimum.
If a PAR approach is to be flown manually, the PM is responsible to set HDG inputs/ changes via the FGP automatically on receipt of a new HDG from the controller, VS changes can be made either by the PM on request from the PF, or were made via TCS input by the PF. Coordination “ who will do what and when” is part of the of the approach briefing.
For any approach the controller will ask for the decision height ( not approved for minimum below 400 ft AGL)
