Agency Description:
Perfect Game is the number one organization for baseball tournaments and showcases at the high school level. These tournaments are conducted all year long with the majority of them being held in the summer. There are multiple games every day and usually run through the weekend. Perfect Game conducts these tournaments to give the top high school baseball players from around the country as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic a chance to show off their skill sets to MLB scouts and college recruiters. They also get the chance to play with/against many other players at their same skill level. I will be working for the Mid-Atlantic region of Perfect Game and they specifically provide showcases in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The office for the Mid-Atlantic branch is stationed in Voorhees, NJ.
Internship Description:
As an intern for Perfect Game, I will get the opportunity to receive a professional and educational experience in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented environment. I will learn various skills in the fields of scouting, coaching, and event operations. My job responsibilities will include:
• Assist in coaching and the production of showcase and tournament events, including, but not limited to field management, game scoring, game scouting and merchandise sales.
• Write scouting recap stories of tournament games for the event's scout blogs.
• Drive vans full of equipment to various locations in the United States for baseball showcase and tournament events.
All interns must be able to come to work at least five days a week and work long hours including weekends and nights. We will travel to fields surrounding the Mid-Atlantic region to conduct these tournaments and since I am from this area I will not need housing.
Internship Outcome:
During the summer I will be working with the leader in baseball showcases and tournaments at the high school level. Perfect Game is one of the most well-known organizations in baseball and will provide me with a great experience in the sport management field. Like I mentioned above, I will gain experience in baseball scouting, coaching, and event operations. I will also get the chance to meet many professional scouts and college recruiters which will help with networking. Many former Perfect Game interns are now working within the organization or have even moved onto professional scouting careers as a result of the internship opportunity. Overall, it will provide me with a great experience to add to my resume and a chance to apply the knowledge I gained in the classroom to a real life experience.
Community Description: Geographic, Socio-Demographic, and Leisure Characteristics
Voorhees, New Jersey
Voorhees is one of the larger towns in South Jersey being a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The population is around 30,000 people and the area consists of almost 12 square miles. It is home to many professional businesses as well as a lot of residential areas. Voorhees is an upper middle-class town about 30 minutes away from Philadelphia, PA and a little less than two hours away from New York.
As far as the socio-demographics, Voorhees is made up of mostly Caucasians which make up 78% of the town and then Asians are the second largest making up about 11% of the population. A little over half of the households consist of married couples. The leading age group in Voorhees is 45 to 64 years old with the median age being 42 years old. The female to male ratio is pretty close with 52% of the population being females leaving the males with 48%. Like I mentioned above, it is an upper middle-class town with the average income being around $80,000. Overall, Voorhees is a typical suburban community. (http://www.movoto.com/voorhees-nj/08043/demographics/)
Since it is a suburb, there are a great amount of leisure activities in the area. All the Philadelphia sports teams are just a quick car ride away which makes sporting events huge in this area. Also, there are a lot of amusement parks in the area which includes Sahara Sam’s Water Park, Clementon Park, Splash World, and Diggerland. Along with this, there are numerous movie theatres and bowling alleys around Voorhees. Finally, this town has an endless amount of food choices whether you want fast food or a nice sit-down restaurant. This is far from a vacation town but the residents of Voorhees as well as visitors have plenty of leisure activities to partake in during their free time. Personally, with all the time I spent here, the other interns and I took advantage of the nearby mall, food court, and basketball courts during our free time. Overall, Voorhees was a great diverse geographical area to work this summer with a lot of leisure, recreation, and sport activities.
