Process for becoming a 4-H Certified Shooting Sports Instructor in Ingham County

There are two separate steps in becoming a certified Michigan 4-H Shooting Sports instructor. First, one must complete the 4-H Volunteer Selection Process through the Ingham County Extension 4-H office. The second step is to attend the 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Certification workshop.


Volunteer Selection Process

As you get started you may want to call the Ingham County Extension 4-H Office (517-676-7207) to introduce yourself and let them know that you interested in completing the Volunteer Selection Process. They will be able to help explain the timeline and give you other information that can help you through the process.

Go to the Ingham County 4-H website (http://ce.ingham.org/4H.aspx) and click on “Become a 4-H Volunteer “on the left side of the page. Links to the required application forms will be found on the page. The section below is what you will find on that page.
Volunteer Selection Process Steps in order:
Please note that forms may be mailed, faxed, or emailed to Ingham County MSU Extension, 121 E. Maple St. Mason, MI 48854.

Mail Reference Forms (need 3 separate personal references)

Michigan 4-H Online Orientation Modules (must complete all 4 modules; Password: volunteer)
2.  Face to face interview and local 4-H program role orientation


3. Once the individual has been confirmed as a volunteer, that individual will enroll in 4-H through the Michigan 4-H Online system.

4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Certification

The Michigan 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Certification workshop is for 4-H staff, adult 4-H volunteers who have completed the 4-H Volunteer Selection Process with their county, and teens enrolled in a 4-H shooting sports club who are at least 16 years old as of Jan. 1 of the year of participation. Participants must be approved by their county MSU Extension 4-H Staff person to work with 4-H Shooting Sports Programs and have at least a basic working knowledge of, and experience in the discipline in which they wish to participate. Disciplines offered will include archery, rifle (BB, .22, air/pellet), shotgun, muzzleloader, and hunting and wildlife.



Adults who successfully complete the workshop and all other requirements will receive certification as a Michigan 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor for the discipline in which they participated. Only 4-H certified instructors can lead live-fire, on-range shooting and archery experiences for youth and/or in 4-H Shooting Sports programs.
