Rainy day Route (Birds eye view):

  1. Dropped off at Clubhouse.

This is the Clubhouse, it was designed to be a hub for all students—not just those who live in the residence halls— on this side of campus. The amenities include:

    • Mailboxes— each student will receive a mailbox with the code to open it. Additionally, if the package is larger than the mailbox, it will be delivered to the 24/7 front desk of the clubhouse.

    • Extra laundry facilities— UNF laundry facilities have the extra feature in which it allows students to text them when their laundry is finished.

    • Game room

    • Convenience Store & Pita Pit

    • Pool

  1. Proceed through Cove, across the bridge and pause under pavilion in front of Hall.

This is a great time to share how environmentally beautiful our campus is. The University of North Florida is nestled in more than 13-hundred acres— with more than 500 left as a nature preserve.

  • Includes 5 miles of hiking trails, and numerous bodies of water, including Lake Oneida

  • UNF Eco-Adventures—students can sign out free camping equipment, go kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, includes zip lining and a ropes course.

    • Eco-Adventures also plans tours off campus that include mountain climbing and paddling in nearby bodies of water like the St. John’s River.

    • UNF Eco-Adventure students (Amy Costa, Jake FitzRoy and staff member Vernon Payne) recently created our very own children’s book A Home for Ozzie, about an osprey that cannot find a home and has some help in finding one at UNF.

Let me talk to you about safety. Here at UNF, we take safety very seriously. As we take the tour, you may notice the blue poles with blue lights that are scattered every few feet through campus.

  • There are 320 emergency phones—88 of which are blue police poles.

  • Connected directly with our University Police Department, which is a fully accredited department, with 30 officers available 24/7

    • In addition, it does not have to be an emergency to call on our officers. For example: if you ever feel uneasy about walking alone at night, just call the UNF police department and ask for an escort to your car or your campus destination.

  • Campus Alert System— a system that will send the student a message via text and voice message. If there is ever an emergency on campus (for example: a tornado warning) it will warn the students.

    • UNF is located on the outskirts of Jacksonville and there is no traffic that goes through campus, keeping most crime off campus.

  1. Take tour of the Café.

This is our Osprey Café, where our human ospreys eat. All our first year students dine with us their first year of campus, and we have some incredible options within the cafe, including:

  • Grill Station— offering different daily specials

  • Soup and salad bar— all freshly prepped daily

  • Bakery station—offering fresh made from scratch breads with deli area and panini

  • Hot Stone Oven station— making pizzas and other baked items

  • Action cooking station— food made to order

  • “The Kitchen” station—comfort foods with carving station and vegetarian options

  • The Pantry—continental breakfast available at all times, including the ice cream machine.

We have nutritionists who work with the staff as well as the Office of Health Promotion offers classes to help students make healthy choices. We also offer vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and kosher options for all our students. Also, if you notice there are no trays in the Café which helps with portion control because our eyes are always hungrier than our stomachs.

  1. Proceed to the Green, staying under cover of Communications Building to avoid rain.

Here at UNF we have the Green, another great hang out stop for our students.

  • Big public area to throw a Frisbee or some guitar playing

  • Freedom of speech area

  • Some professors will have class outside on the Green.

You will also see the Lazzara Fine Arts Center, which is home to one of six University of North Florida Flagship Programs: These programs are noted for their national excellence. Each of these programs receive additional resources to push the programs even further. These programs include Music, Coastal Biology, International Business, Transportation and Logistics, Nutrition and Dietetics and Nursing.

Our Music Flagship:

  • Has had students play at Vatican City, and Carnegie Hall

  • Students have the opportunity to Study abroad to play in symphonies

  • Many of our students play in groups around Jacksonville, including our symphony

Robinson Building: Home of the Communication Department

  • Has a state of the art 500,000 high definition studio, where students produce a monthly news magazine program that runs on WVWJ-TV, and other programming.

  • For our basketball games, our students receive experience by working with ESPN in the broadcasting aspect.

  • Our journalism program works with Spinnaker, our student-run media. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The journalism program has nothing to do with Spinnaker.

  1. Continuing under cover, proceed to Computer Science Building where there will be stairs to climb to the second floor. (Elevator is to the right should it be required)

Computer science program:

Rated No.1 in the state for the best dollar-for-dollar return on investment for a computer science degree, according to data released in the 2014 Payscale College ROI Report.

  • Computer Science program has a 100 percent job placement upon graduating

  • Second floor of Computer Science building is home to computer labs.

  1. Continue on the second floor, make a right to show off alumni square.

  • Chick-Fil-A

  • Full functioning UPS store

  • Sushi (made fresh daily) and wrap eatery

  1. Cut through Building 2 in order to go through the other side to show off the Library and the Business Building.

Parents, if your son or daughter tells you it’s “date night at Tommy G’s” you should be thrilled because that means they will be studying in the Thomas G. Carpenter Library.

  • Students can check out laptops, textbooks, iPads and even markers to use on the white boards.

  • Second floor offers large study rooms for students to use.

  • Has four floors, which get quieter as you go up, with third and fourth floor as quiet floors.

  • IT Services— on the first floor, provides technical help and can fix your laptop.

    • UNF also provides free downloads for programs such as Microsoft, PowerPoint, Excel and the Adobe Series

Point towards the Business Building

This is our Coggin College of Business, which houses two Flagship Programs:

Transportation and Logistics:

  • Students are exposed to all forms of transportation because Port of Jacksonville is the third largest seaport along the eastern seaboard of Florida.

  • UNF also has a partnership with CSX. Headquarters is in Jacksonville and is one of the largest railroad companies in the U.S. UNF students have the opportunity to intern with CSX and a couple of our students have graduated to work there.

  • Our transportation and logistics program has ranked in the top 25 in the nation for thought leadership.

International Business:

  • Placed in the top 5 percent in the nation on global business concepts

  • Students are required to complete an international experience, and international internship and learn a foreign language

  • Have a prestigious program known as the KEDGE/UNF Double Degree program, in which selective undergraduate UNF students earn one undergraduate degree from France and one from the US. The University of North Florida accepts only 5 students per year into the Double Degree program.

For other business majors—Jacksonville community offers good internships including a partnership with SunTrust and Win Dixie.

  1. Cut through Building 2 once more and go down the steps, continuing under covered walkway to enter into the Biological Sciences Building through the side door.

The primary reason you are here today is to find the university that will teach you all of the skills you need to start your career and the rest of your life. You are here to learn and we have some of the best programs and facilities in the country. Just one example is our newest academic facility, the Biological Sciences Building. We are in Darwin’s Garden and I’d like to point out the roof-top greenhouse, which contains living coral and other marine life. The greenhouse is used as a teaching and research lab.

  • Our hallmarks are what truly make attending UNF special. This includes our low student-to-faculty ratio of 20:1

  • Transformational Learning Opportunities (TLO)—any opportunity to learn outside of the classroom, is a TLO. This includes class outside, study abroad, research, volunteering, and any opportunity to learn outside of this classroom.

    • Another example of a University of North Florida hallmark is the opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct research with their professors. Most other colleges, you have to be a grad student to get that type of experience.

Coastal Biology is another Flagship Program

  • While this is impressive, much of the classwork is actually done in the St. Johns River, the Intracoastal Waterway or the Atlantic Ocean.

  • We have two nationally known experts whose work takes them out on the water. Dr. Quincy Gibson studies dolphins with her students and Dr. Jim Gelschleiter (also known as Dr. G) studies sharks with his students. (This is considered a TLO)

Our labs are fully furnished with state-of-the-art equipment. All of our labs have a max of 24 students. That allows our professors to provide individualized attention and hands-on learning opportunities for students.

The Necropsy Lab:

  • This facility allows University of North Florida biologists to partner with state and federal agencies to study the biology and cause of death of dolphins, sharks and small whales from almost anywhere on the southeastern seaboard.

  • The necropsy lab enables our professors to incorporate these examinations into their classes, giving our students the unique opportunity to participate.

  • The only necropsy lab between Wilmington, North Carolina and Ft. Pierce; this allows experts from all over to come and work hands on with students.

  1. Exit through the same side door and proceed to show Peace Plaza under the covered walkway.

This space is called Peace Plaza now, but when the University opened in 1972, this actually where the first graduating class of 35 people received their diplomas.

As we stand here between Gandhi, Martin Luther King and a functional monument called Thoreau’s Table, it is a good time to talk about our values as they are inspired by these two leaders. The University of North Florida is committed to values that promote the welfare and positive transformation of individuals, communities and societies. We value:

  • The pursuit of truth and knowledge carried out in the spirit of intellectual and artistic freedom

  • Ethical conduct

  • Community engagement

  • Diversity

  • Responsibility to the natural environment and

  • Mutual respect and civility

Peace Plaza is a place for personal reflection. It’s also become a place of tradition. Students rub Martin Luther King’s foot for luck before giving a presentation and they rub Gandhi’s book before a big test.

  • Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) — provides advising for First Year Students and provides free tutoring for all major subjects. Additionally, they offer free workshops that teach you tricks to make studying easier, tips on public speaking and ways to avoid test anxiety.

  • Career Services — Helping UNF students turning their college education into a lifelong career. Help students identifying possible majors, career paths and strategies to get there. Also aids the students in resume building and gives mock interviews.

    • Volunteer Services: a great way for students to find out about opportunities to build experience on a resume or want to make a difference the community.

  • Counseling Center — if students need someone to talk to or are having trouble adjusting to the transition to college, we have this option for our students. We have nutritionists on staff and psychiatrists there to help.

  • Women’s/Interfaith Center—they often have coffee chats and a library so students can come and meet new people.

Here’s a great fact parents like to hear: Students who receive a bachelor’s degree from UNF are more likely to get a job in Florida than graduates from any other state university.

Honors College:

  • Limited to 20 students, so students can really pursue what excites them academically with professors who will challenge them intellectually.

  • Has about 750 students, including nearly 200 first-year students that entered in fall 2015.

  • Are heavily discussion-based, with plentiful opportunities for careful, critical thought. Many courses include field trips and other activities beyond the classroom so that students have the chance to see how the topic relates to the real world while applying the skills they’ve learned.

    • Example: take a Spring Break trip to Peru in order to learn how to invest, but also has a study abroad opportunity in Machu Picchu.

  1. Continue forward by the bamboo garden and cut under the Brooks College of Health.

Here you’ll see the Brooks College of Health, home to two Flagship Programs:

Nursing:

  • Has continually ranked among the top five nursing programs in the state.

  • Approximately 110 pre-licensure nursing students graduate each year and 90 percent are placed in local jobs.

  • Students are placed in major medical and bioscience hubs like Mayo, Baptist, Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Brooks Rehabilitation (the second largest inpatient rehabilitation in the U.S.)

Nutrition and Dietetics:

  • Ranked No. 4 in the state (according to Med-colleges)

  • They go on field trips to organic farms and they work hands-on with UNF’s Ogier Gardens.

  • Students intern all over the city, including with Jacksonville’s very own NFL team, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Brooks College of Health is also home to our Student Health Services:

  • A professional doctor and a triage nurse hotline, so you can call 24 hours a day to receive medical attention.

  • There is a small fee but it is often times much less expensive than other places in Jacksonville, it is also right on campus.

Physical Training — graduate program rated No. 1 in the nation; very competitive

Exercise Science — leads into physical therapy program. They get to work with our Division 1 Sports, and is a limited access program leading into big jobs upon graduating.

Bio-medical pre-professional program— an excellent program that offers great training before continuing onto medical school.

  1. Cross into the Student Union, pausing under cover before proceeding to the Wellness Complex and where the bus will pick up.

This is our Student Union, our award-winning, environmentally sound facility. This is a hub of student activity, especially Wednesdays, which are Market Days. That’s when the plaza is filled with vendors and all kinds of booths.

  • Food Court —complete with our Papa Johns, Einstein Bagels, and Chicken Grill. Also has an Outtakes, even containing a mini Starbucks within. Above is our Boathouse, a full-service sports bar and grill.

  • Bookstore — two stories, complete with all the Osprey swag as well as all textbooks you will need within your classes

  • LGBT Resource Center — one of the few campuses in Florida that has this center. We believe every student should feel welcomed and supported and we have put the resources behind it for this very special office that has won several national awards.

  • Student Government — students get great leadership experience running for office and voting on how to allocate more than $4 million generated from some student fees.

  • Fraternity and Sorority Life — we have 27 chapters on campus on campus. Greek life here is known for helping students hone their leadership skills and providing opportunities for civic engagement.

  • Spinnaker Media — a student magazine, a TV Station and radio station (95.5). Spinnaker has won the Pacemaker Award, which is known as the Pulitzer Prize for collegiate journalism.

  • Club Alliance — oversees more than 200 clubs on campus (from Surf Club, to Student Criminal Justice Association, to the Society of Women Engineers). You can even create your own club! Every fall, they host Club Fest, so students can see all the different opportunities for involvement.

  • Osprey Production—if prospective students are interested in Event Planning, it is run by students, therefore getting more hands on experience. They throw events for example a movie every week with free pizza, popcorn and drinks. They throw our concerts for example Twenty One Pilots, Big Sean, 3OH!3, Wiz Khalifa, Jason Derulo, Cobra Starships, Billy Joel.

This is our Student Wellness Complex and it truly offers something for everyone—it was built with all fitness levels in mind:

  • Osprey Cliff —our 34-foot custom-built climbing wall that is open to everyone.

  • 1/8 of a mile rubber indoor three-lane track that offers some great views of campus and is kept at a constant 72 degrees year round.

  • 27,000 square foot fitness center with cardio and weight equipment. 260 exercise stations—some are wheelchair accessible as well.

  • Personal Assessment Center — offers students free Blood Pressure screenings, Body Composition Testing Services, Fitness Assessments and a Stretching Program.

  • Nutrition Center — works with students to develop a personal diet plan for healthy living.

  • Bod Pod — measures resting metabolic rate and body composition. With a scheduled appointment, it will tell you exactly how much fat vs. lean you have, and allows you to compare your results in three months.

Point out the Arena and the Recreation Center, touching on our sports:

  • The University of North Florida has seven men’s and 10 women’s Division I teams that compete against teams from all over the Southeast.

  • Many of our teams have made it to championship level in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

  • In addition to being outstanding athletes, they are also exemplary students. More than 60 percent of the scholar-athletes have a 3.0 GPA or better, and several have a perfect 4.0

  • Any D1 athletes have mandatory study hours facilitated by the university
