RESOLUTION 2017-360

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING THE 2017 COMCAST LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.


WHEREAS, Jacksonville is fortunate in having a business community that values civic involvement and is committed to programs that encourage young people to become involved in the community; and

WHEREAS, since 2001, the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program has recognized the best and the brightest of our high school seniors and awarded more than $24 million in scholarships to help approximately 23,000 students pursue higher education; and

WHEREAS, through the Leaders and Achievers program, Comcast has worked with high school principals and guidance counselors in identifying promising students that exemplify academic achievement and leadership skills; and

WHEREAS, funded through the Comcast Foundation, the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards nominees who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students; and

WHEREAS, twenty-four Duval County students will receive Leaders and Achievers Scholarships totaling $24,000 in 2017; those scholarship winners include: Justin A. Gilbert - Baldwin Middle/Senior High School; Adam Rhoads - Mandarin High School; Maleeha Agha - Darnell Cookman Middle/High School; Michlyne Bellas - Atlantic Coast High School; Nicholas Hartley - Bishop Kenny High School; Skylar Derr - Duval Virtual Instruction Academy; Kayley DeLay - Duncan U. Fletcher High School; Alexandria Perry - First Coast High School; Thurman J. Picarelli - Sandalwood High School; Talisha Jones - Wolfson High School; Trevor Yerby - Trinity Christian Academy; Jada Glenn - Jones Home School; Ikrom Alajoulin - River City Science Academy; Spencer Webster-Bass - Paxon School for Advanced Studies; Elijah Ramey - Greenwood School; Cassidy May Kinsman - University Christian School; Da'Shaun K. Miller - Terry Parker High School; Ari Howard - Douglas Anderson School of the Arts; Christina Cummings - Ed White High School; Shaniece Traylor - Ribault High School; Milind Mishra - Stanton College Preparatory School; Dayquon Edmond - Raines High School; Jennifer Tate - Bishop John J. Snyder High School; and Alexis Gettemy - Providence School; and

WHEREAS, Comcast’s commitment to excellence in education and in rewarding outstanding students for their academic achievements, leadership potential and involvement in the community epitomizes the Jacksonville business community’s recognition of the promise of our young people in Jacksonville’s future; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville:

Section 1. The City Council does hereby recognize and honor the 2017 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship recipients and commends the Comcast Foundation for its commitment to Jacksonville’s young scholars and future leaders.

Section 2. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon signature by the Mayor or upon becoming effective without the Mayor's signature.
