ROMAN THEATRE

All kinds of jazz
A unique and authentic atmosphere

At sunset, on the warm stones of the Roman Theatre, jazz lovers have listened to concerts for 35 years. Between immensity, romanticism and authenticity, every year the magic of music operates in this unique location with a rich history. With all the senses awakened, from the top of the terraces the splendid view is equalled only by its impeccable acoustics and the artists' performances on stage. Seen from the bottom, this impressive "wall of humanity*" emphasizes the splendour of the Vienne Roman Theatre.

* For his last visit to Vienne in 2001, Claude Nougaro, said he was very moved when singing in front of this "wall of humanity".

Le RéZZo FOCAL Jazz à Vienne #11

For its 11th consecutive edition, the Jazz à Vienne festival wishes to open up its programme to the emerging French jazz scene. The aim is to support and highlight the new generation.

RéZZo FOCAL Jazz à Vienne was born further to Jazz à Vienne's will to bring new jazz talents to the forefront. For the selected groups, this national springboard is a genuine opportunity to play in professional scenic conditions in front of an informed and large audience. The winner of RéZZo FOCAL Jazz à Vienne can record an album on a famous label (Jazz Village - Harmonia Mundi), receive support for its distribution, in addition to one year’s artistic and promotional accompaniment. National jazz actors, our partners (clubs, festivals, associations...) help to unearth the new regional jazz scene. FOCAL, a manufacturer of upmarket loud and acoustic speakers, offers the winner a studio recording. Max Pinto 4tet, Jérémy Ternoy trio, Paradox, Oxyd, Céline Bonacina trio, Sidony Box, Trio Enchant(i)er, Impérial Quartet, WaterBabies and Uptake have been winners since 2004. For festival goers, it is also the opportunity to discover and preview the artists who will influence tomorrow's jazz!

Don’t miss the nine selected bands on the Cybèle stage during the first weekend of the festival.

With the support of Focal, Harmonia Mundi and the Sacem

Jazz à Vienne fait son cinéma #6

For its sixth edition, the CinéClap Vienne association will be pairing up with the Les Amphis Cinéma and showing films in support of the Jazz à Vienne festival during May and June. With CinéClap Vienne and Les Amphis, jazz is present in documentaries and movies, before the festival.

Too Many Zooz

Fostered in the heart of the New York City subway, Too Many Zooz is a genuine UFO. Although the band is made up of three musicians (Matt Doe on trumpet, Leo P on baritone saxophone, king Of Sludges on drums and percussions), Too Many Zooz is capable of producing an astoundingly powerful sound. This organic music called “Brasshouse” is the musical outcome of a mix of several styles such as jazz, hip hop, gypsy music, soul/funk and their influences. The New York Post speaks of these subway buskers as “the hottest thing in NYC music". As Too Many Zooz grows and continues its way, you might still cross its path from time to time in the world's largest night club: the New York City subway.

Line-up: Léo P (s), Mat Deo (tp), King of Sludge (perc)

Jean-Pierre Alessi 6tet “French Preservation Hall Jazz New Orleans”

This band was created in 2003 to play and revive genuine New Orleans music the way black musicians played it in the 40's: the New Orleans Jazz Revival.

Line-up: J.-P. Alessi (s), Cyrille Ouanich (p), Christian Devaux (b), Henry Lemaire (banjo), Vincent Hurel (dms) and guest

Leyla McCalla

Multi-instrumentalist, this blues woman plays the cello in a very personal way to accompany folky pieces. She is just as happy playing blues on guitar or an old creole song on banjo. Living in Louisiana, she constantly explores traditional jazz and its popular music. Escaped from the Carolina Chocolate Drops group, and Taj Mahal's favourite, cellist and singer Leyla McCalla proposes a solo album as a tribute to a mythical figure of the Harlem Renaissance of the 20's: poet and author Langston Hughes. Her charm and talent carry us away...

Line-up: Leyla McCalla (voc, cello, g, banjo)

ZeD Brass Band

Set up in 2012, this band from Lyon was initially made up of eight musicians from several regional groups (Big Band de l’OEUF, Dead Man Orchestra, Les Charentaises De Luxe). With this configuration, the ZeD Brass Band proposes vigorous and groovy music and reinterprets standards of the greatest second line fanfares. With Télep P. Maembel's arrival in the band during the “un doua de jazz” festival, ZeD Brass Band enriched its repertoire with hip hop accents.

Line-up: Boris Pokora (ts), Sylvain Felix (bs), Christophe Metra, Hervé Salamone (tp), Pierre Baldy-Moulinier (tb), Philippe Bostvironnois, Hugo Crost (perc), Vincent Zed Ollier (soua)
