Wildlife Services (WS) is being sued by WildEarth Guardians because the agency’s wildlife damage program is based on outdated science and uses indiscriminate methods that kill many non-targets, including protected species. The lawsuit from WildEarth Guardians asks a judge to shut down the federal agency that spent $127 million of taxpayers’ money in 2010 to exterminate over five million animals.
Wildlife Services (WS) did its last environmental impact statement in 1994, although a new one is required under the National Environmental Act. According to recent stories in the Sacramento Bee, WS accidentally killed over 50,000 non-target animals since 2000, including bald eagles and over a thousand dogs. The American Soc. of Mammalogists has strongly objected to this damage control program that normally fails to address conflicts through non-lethal methods. If you agree, ask your Congressional representative to defund WS’s budget for lethal control.
