	SMART GOAL	In order to improve our service, and subsequently our reputation with internal clients, we will develope a process that streamlines our client support model by the end of the summer and mandate all our staff take a relationship building training class by December 2012.
	Is it Achievable: Is it Relevant:	Do I have the resources to do this? (taking training costs time and money) Yes because service level was identified as a significant issue in the employee engagement survey with regard to our area.

	Better Goal	In order to diversify my program portfolio, I will partner with other departments and complete on 2 cross-department program development projects that will improve the breath of offerings to students.
	Make it Time-bound	When will the projects be complete? What milestones can you measure?
	SMART GOAL	In order to diversify my program portfolio, I will partner with other departments and complete on 2 cross-department program development related projects that will improve the breath of offerings to students. The project plans will be in place by September 2012 and both projects are to be completed by June 2013.
	Is it Achievable? Is it Relevant?	Do I have the support of the other departments? Do I have the resources to complete the projects? Are the timelines realistic? Yes, building campus connections helps us build a One University culture and improving programs ties back to the “Eyes High” goal of enriching the quality of learning.

Research Goal Example

	Be more Specific Make it Measurable	What steps need to be taken to secure funding? How will I measure my success?

	Make it Time-bound	When will you do this?
	SMART GOAL	I will increase our research funding by 25% through identifying and applying for 2 high priority grants by Sept 2012.
	Is it Achievable? Is it Relevant?	Is it likely we will secure the funding by applying? Do I have a back-up plan to get funding? Yes, because it fits with the Eye’s High Top 5 research goal

Teaching Excellence Goal Example


	Goal	My goal is to increase the Student USRI ratings for our faculty.
	Be Specific	What specific areas do you want to improve?
	Improved Goal	My goal is to increase percentage of USRI completed and higher ratings related to overall quality of instruction.

	Good Goal	My goal is to support the improvement of the teaching skills of our faculty members resulting in higher scores on the USRI related to quality of instruction.
	Is it Measurable	What percentage increases are you looking for? How will you know this goal is achieved? How will you achieve the goal?
	Better Goal	My goal is to support the improvement of the teaching skills of our faculty members leading to 20% more student selecting “excellent” on the question rating overall quality of instruction. I will support this goal through running a weekly “teaching excellence” lunch and learn series for the faculty and ensure this priority is well communicated all faculty members.
	Make it Time-bound	When do you expect to see these results? What milestones can you measure?
	SMART GOAL	My goal is to support the improvement of the teaching skills of our faculty members leading to more student selecting “excellent” on the question rating overall quality of instruction. This will result in a 3-7% increase a year and subsequently an overall increase of 20% within 3 years. I will support this goal through running a weekly lunch and learn series for the faculty until the end of the year and ensure this priority has been well communicated to all faculty members by fall 2012.
	Is it Achievable? Is it Relevant?	Yes, I have resources (Teaching and Learning Centre, time can be devoted at faculty meetings) Yes, the University currently has a focus on enriching the quality of learning as outlined in the “Eyes High” strategy
