Southeast transportation powerhouse The LPA Group, Inc., which helped create the vision for Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport and designed the terminal, has multiplied its horizons through merger with Michael Baker Corporation. The LPA Group, Inc., brings to the merger a 30-year reputation for expertise in services that include aviation, highways, bridges, architecture, program management, design-build, traffic engineering and planning, hydrology, and environmental planning. Founded in 1940, Michael Baker Corporation has established its civil engineering reputation in the Midwest and is adding offices on the West Coast. The combined companies employ more than 3,200 people with vast experience in transportation engineering and construction-related services.
While ground transportation projects now constitute about two-thirds of the company’s work, The LPA Group, Inc,. initially focused on aviation and still works with about 20 percent of Georgia’s 104 public airports, including the only Georgia airport built in the last 30 years – Paulding Northwest Atlanta. The company has managed large transportation projects in the Southeast, providing leadership for all facets of construction, and has partnered in many prominent design-build initiatives. The LPA Group, Inc., has the lead role in planning the road that will help move cargo in and out of the Savannah port and is active in a variety of burgeoning public/private partnership efforts.
The company’s list of prominent projects also includes widening and lengthening the runway at Cobb’s McCollum Airport, runway rehabilitation at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, construction of the parking apron supporting the new international terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, intersection improvements at Ga. 400 and Hammond Drive and at the I-575 interchange at Rope Mill Road, and a bridge linking Skidaway Island with the mainland near Savannah.
Its solid base of long-term employees allows The LPG Group, Inc., to offer a team of experienced specialists familiar with industry trends and well-acquainted with Georgia Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration officials. Among them is retired GDOT Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl, who joined The LPA Group, Inc., as a Vice President specializing in ground transportation four years ago. A Hiram resident, Linnenkohl emphasizes the company’s focus on working withclients rather than for clients to meet needs they might not even realize.
Linnenkohl says The LPA Group, Inc., which has been a Paulding Chamber of Commerce member for most of the past decade and a Chairman’s Club member the past year, has always valued community involvement. “We try to fit into our community and support it; we like being part of the communities we serve,” he says.
Michael Reiter, The LPA Group, Inc., Aviation Services Assistant Vice President, was instrumental in development of Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport, and he praises the vision that local leaders brought to the project, “capturing the character of the community.” Adherence to architectural standards contributes to the airport being “second to none when compared with other facilities around the state,” says Reiter. “It makes a great gateway and a very professional foot forward to attract future economic development.”
The LPA Group, Inc., continues its involvement with the airport through plans to expand the graded area around the terminal for businesses serving or dependent upon the aviation industry.
