Accomplishments At The University Of Georgia: Griffin, Georgia (1980 - 2006).
Co-edited “Postharvest Handling: A Systems Approach” with 3rd edition published in May 2014. Applied Systems Thinking, Quality Management Systems, and Supply Chain Management to fresh fruit and vegetable supply chains, emphasizing flow of information and money from consumer to grower and product from grower to consumer. Conducted workshops with industry groups for improving supply chain logistics for fresh horticultural products. Developed computer simulations for fresh produce supply chains and retail inventory management. Co-led an interdisciplinary team for improving postharvest systems for horticultural products. Developed a mobile research laboratory that moved with commercial shipments from the field to the retail store for making on-site quality evaluations. Founded a Postharvest Systems Laboratory with the capability of performing pilot scale unit operations for fresh horticultural crops. Applied ergonomic principles for improving visual sorting at packinghouses. Patented a non-contact food firmness detector and a shelled nutcracker. Originated training and consulting programs for food related businesses (Postharvest Active Learning Lab - PAL Lab).
