Students use the Six Traits writing process with emphasis on drafting, revising, and editing.

Skills: Be able to do (Verbs)

  • Draft, revise, edit, publish

  • Integrate voice

  • Apply conventions

  • Demonstrate proper word choice

  • Clearly state ideas


Identifying Big Ideas from Unwrapped Standards:

  1. Successful writers follow all steps of the writing process.

  2. Voice draws the reader into the writing.

  3. Conventions and sentence fluency are necessary to convey ideas.

  4. Proper organization of stated ideas provides clarity for the reader.

  5. Precise word choice creates a visual image for the reader.


Essential Questions from Big Ideas to Guide Instruction and Assessment:

  1. How does following the steps of the writing process contribute to a quality, published piece?

  2. What is the purpose of voice in the writing process?
