Structural Analysis and Design of Structures are the
two most interesting subjects, I have been studying in my current semester.
During this period, I have found the design and analysis of conventional
structural elements, an interesting field. Therefore, I would like to explore ongoing research opportunities related to this topic.
Specifically, I would like to work on “the performance of superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) as reinforcement in concrete frames”. SMA is an important emerging material with wide applications in Smart Composite Structures due to their shape memory abilities which significantly improves performance owing to the ductility and high damping capabilities upon the application of sudden loads to the concrete frames while still maintaining its elastic characteristics. I would like to access experimental
studies on the dynamic loading,
physical properties, and overall health and safety impacts of SMA reinforcement in a concrete structure followed by the life cycle cost (LCC) assessment to determine the economic impacts caused during their service life.
The main challenge for me at this stage is the lack of any prior research experience. The prospect of learning under the guidance of experts in the field would help me immensely to gain a solid foundation in this field of choice. I believe that upon
completion of this program, I will be better equipped to understand the concepts and their technical approachability to sustainable structural design solutions to complex real-life problems. It will also equip me to undertake further studies in this field.
