Topic: Verb Tenses ( Present Tense)

Date: Monday 11th May, 2020.

A verb is a word that indicates an action, event or a state.

A tense is a verb form that shows the time of an action, event or state by a change in its form and the use of a helping verb. Examples are see, saw, seen.

The basic tenses in English Language are present tense, past tense and future tense.

Present Tense

The present tense of the verb is a tense expressing an action that is currently going on or habitually performed or a state that generally exist.

The present tense can be divided into:

a. Simple present tense

b. Present continuous tense

c. Present perfect tense

1. The simple present tense is used :

a. to show a habitual action.

Examples


She goes to the market everyday.

They live by the riverside.

b. to state a general statement or a fact.

Examples


i. The earth moves round the sun.

ii. Birds have feathers.

c. In conditional statements.

Example


He will give me the money if I go alone.

2. The present continuous tense is used:

a. to show an action that is happening at the time of speaking.

Examples

i.They are standing on the table.

ii. The teacher is holding a pen and paper.

b. to show a future action that has been planned.

Examples

i. They are going on a trip next week.

ii. My sister is visiting me next week.

c. to show a continuous action in the passive voice.

Examples

i. The school is being renovated.

ii. The plates are being washed by John.

3. The present perfect tense is used:

a. to show an action that has just happened or was just completed.

Examples


i. The students have just gone home.

ii. We have just finished washing the dishes.

b. to show an action which began in the past and is still continuing into the present.

Examples


i. He has never eaten strawberries before.

ii. Have you ever seen a ghost

before?

c. for an action which happened at an indefinite time between the past and now.

Examples

i. She has spoken to the teacher.

ii. John has taken his book.
