Subject: Math Cycle/Year: 1 & 2

Lesson Plan Title: Are you smarter than a 5th grader? Time Period: 1 hour

Learning Targets/Student Learning Objectives:

  • By the end of this lesson, students will have worked on their mental math skills in groups, and will have begun working on practice cards to use for their next test.

Activities:

  • Hook – Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? (20 minutes): Split your class into 4 groups. Open this link (http://brainfall.com/quizzes/are-you-smarter-than-a-5th-grader-in-math/) onto the smartboard in order to start the brain competition!

With each question, the first group to raise their hand and answer the question correctly gets a point. Those with the most points at the end get a small prize.

  • Review Cards (15-20 minutes): Have the students get into groups of two and take out their math work, as well as the information on what will be on their next test. Have piles of different colored cue cards on your desk for the students to use to make their own flashcards!

  • Mental Math Musical Chairs (15-20 minutes): Have all of your students sit down in their chairs and give each of them 5 slips of paper. When they are ready, they can get up and “challenge” each other. In a challenge, the students must take turns showing their opponent a flash card that they made until one student gets the answer wrong, in which case they give their piece of paper to the “winner”. Keep playing until one student is left standing, and they get first dibs on a small prize.
