December 2015 Events and Activities: Business Media Relations Program Leverages the RNC, physical development– In late October, Rick Batyko traveled to New York City for a Team NEO RNC-themed visit along with Destination Cleveland’s David Gilbert and University of Akron political scientist, John Green. The trip was a part of our ongoing business media relations program and was highly instrumental in establishing relationships with key reporters from outlets such as Bloomberg, The Financial Times, and Business Insider. It resulted in this placement in Business Insider. We also attracted a The Atlantic magazine reporter to Cleveland who, writing for its affiliate CityLab, published a story on Dec. 22 titled. “Big U.S. Transportation Infrastructure Projects to Watch in 2016” noting Cleveland’s Public Square renovation. The article links to another of our placements in CityLab from earlier this year, an article titled, “How Millennials Are Reviving Cleveland.” Youngstown Business Incubator Rated among the Best in the World – Earlier this month, UBI Global announced its list of the best university associated incubators in the world with the Youngstown Business Incubator earning the number two spot. This great honor speaks to the tremendous work taking place at YBI and represents another important asset available in our region. JobsOhio Launches Redevelopment Pilot Program: JobsOhio launched the Redevelopment Pilot Program (RPP) to support the growth of sites and building inventory in Ohio. The program provides support to strategic sites and buildings in Ohio on a speculative basis (no immediate end user or job commitments). Earlier this month, the Rittman Industrial Park in Wayne County became the first recipient of RPP support. The former packaging manufacturing site is 214 acres with existing infrastructure including rail, water, sewer, electric and gas. The developers have a proven redevelopment track record (15 sites and 3,000 jobs in Ohio) and have considerable resources invested in the site to date. The property is strategically valuable to the local community and the City has committed resources to the development. The RPP enables the City and the developers to accelerate the final stages of the site preparation. Considerable interest in the site from an attraction perspective exist today due to its location and strong water capacity. Team NEO, JobsOhio and the Wayne Economic Development Council are partnering with the developer and the City to market the site. MAEDC Annual Competitiveness Conference Offers Best Practices: Team NEO’s Mary Cierebiej recently attended the Mid-America Economic Development Council’s Annual Competitiveness Conference in Chicago. The best practices-focused conference addressed topics involving FDI, Regionalism, and Deal Execution. Importantly, the event provided Mary the opportunity to interact with 10 different national site consultants. Following the meeting, Mary met with four site consultants located in the Chicago market. Fuel Cell Seminar & Energy Exposition Provides Key Learnings: Team NEO’s Bill Hagstrand recently attended the Fuel Cell Seminar & Energy Exposition in Los Angeles, which is considered the premier U.S. conference for the fuel cell and hydrogen industry. The event offered multiple networking opportunities to discuss the latest in product development, market research and commercialization strategies for all applications and market sectors. The event also illustrated the strong parallels in product development between fuel cells and our growing energy storage cluster. Recent Wins of Note: Martin Pultrusion Receives Assistance from JobsOhio Revitalization Program: Operating in two buildings in Cuyahoga County, Martin Pultrusion was looking to expand. They wanted to remain close to their workforce while expanding and operating in one facility. The former Randall Park Mall in North Randall met the space and geographical requirements but faced a hurdle regarding cost associated with redevelopment. With the help of the JobsOhio Revitalization program, North Randall Northfield, LLC and Martin Pultrusion Group were able to make the former Sears space a viable option. The new space will enable the company to grow an additional 16 jobs and add $575k of new payroll. Ball Metal Food Container Adds New Line at Canton Facility: Ball Metal Food Container, LLC produces steel food containers for packaging a variety of products. The company chose Ohio over Illinois and West Virginia as they plan to add a new production line at their facility in Canton. Ball will invest $32 million at the Canton facility, adding 100 new jobs and creating $5 million in new payroll. Atlantic Tool and Die Chooses to Remain in Ohio despite Competition from Texas: The Atlantic Tool and Die (ATD) Co, Inc. manufactures precision metal stampings and assemblies. ATD made a strategic choice to restructure a portion of their business, which resulted in the need to close a plant in Sharon Center and move 121 jobs to either one of two existing plants in Ohio or to a plant in Texas. Based on customer demand, the Texas operation was initially the top choice. Thanks to support from JobsOhio and the strong workforce ATD already enjoyed in Medina County, ATD ultimately chose to move the 121 jobs to their Seville, OH operation. ATD will retain the 121 jobs and create an additional 40 new jobs with an associated payroll of $1.6 million. National Economic Development Updates of Note: Indiana’s Record Year Could Offer Lessons for Ohio - In Indiana, Governor Pence announced a record-breaking year with Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) securing job commitments with 323 companies – up from 285 in 2014 and the highest on record since IEDC was established in 2005. The companies have committed to creating 26,555 new jobs over the next few years and investing more than $4.79B in operations. Given Indiana’s success, there could be valuable lessons that Ohio should seek to explore. Google Makes Plans for Tennessee Site - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Google announced the company has acquired a former Hemlock Semiconductor site, which it will work to transform into a $600M data center. Google plans to invest $600M in the project – the company’s 8th U.S. data center and 15th globally – and create 70 new jobs. The 1,300 acre site will be powered 100% by renewable energy via an arrangement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). RES Polyflow to Locate Midwest Production Hub in Indiana - Indiana Governor Mike Pence announced that RES Polyflow, a renewable energy solutions company from Perry, Ohio, plans to locate its new Midwest production hub in Indiana, creating up to 136 new jobs by 2019. RES Polyflow will initially invest $90M to construct an 80-acre production facility adjacent to I-69, with plans to fully invest up to $182M into building and equipping the operation by 2019.
