Mary Fallis of Sacramento California supplied information (letter

13AUG1978) on her grandmother MARY-JANE (married James

Wales) and also reports she was called/married Thomas.

An interpretation of her information could be as follows:

William Hosking JAMES Tregenza

married MARY Thomas later married MARY Hosking

| becomes | (née Thomas)

William Hosking a widow MARY-JANE Tregenza

1837 1843

This explains the half brother/sister relationship and the source of the

surname Thomas. A letter from the Redruth registrar states William

Hosking born 24JUL1837 parents William and Mary Hosking, Mary

formerly Thomas. On marriage certificate of JAMES TregenzER and

MARY she is a widow and her father is called James Thomas. William

Hosking came to USA from England via Galena Illinois USA. Mary

Fallis also reports MARY-JANE Tregenza and James Wales married

1850 when she 15 and he 21 and MARY-JANE school teacher at young

age and that James Wales ran a truck farm with his brother.

  • JOSEPH TregAnza married Sarah-J. Allison (born about 1854) at Hazel Green Delaware Iowa on 27OCT1885 maybe JOSPEPH 1844 of this family (Pedigree Resource File http://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/SYG6-7X7)`

OTHER INFORMATION ON UNCONNECTED FAMILY 20 (ILLOGAN) part A (continued)
Story of three Tregenza brothers emigrating to the USA (from a letter from ELBERT G Tregenza)

  • Elbert’s grand-father went to California 1849 with two brothers, left Wisconsin and on reaching New York sailed to Panama where they crossed the isthmus by mule and on foot. They then took a boat north (to the gold strike). Grand-father returned, THOMAS went to Australia, whether EDWARD remained do not know.

  • EDWARD went west in 1849; founded Tregenza architects in Salt Lake City Utah.

  • ELBERT has cousins in Iowa [must be JOHN-ROBERT etc.]

Story in the family about three brothers (with their parents ?), travelling by boat to USA, then covered wagon to lead-mining area of Wisconsin (Hard Scrabble later Hazel Green). They were brought to Hazel Green by the American Mining Company. Story states that two of the brothers were married on board by the captain (Mr. Holbrook) to two sisters who they met on the boat. 'three Tregenza brothers brought to New York from Falmouth' “The Cornish in America" A L Rowse page 271

Others of them (Cornish) re-opened old workings or opened up new ones with improved apparatus, and gave the Lead Region a new lease of life, with excellent figures of production, in the 1860’s and 1870’s. … an example of this renewal of activity from Hazel Green. …Tregenza and Son began work in the fall of 1874, at a flat sheet about five inches thick, the top lead, the lower zinc; their production 20 tons of zinc, 20,000 lb. of lead.” page 199

Though New York was only a port of entry for the vast bulk of Cornish emigrants moving inland, considerable Cornish sediment remains behind.” “ three Tredennick, three Tregenza, two Treloar ….” page 81 "The Cornish in America" A L Rowse

Some of the facts in this story (shipboard marriages and three brothers) are contradicted by records found (see letter from John Faull and Don Bousfield 11NOV1997). The quote from page 271 in A.L. Rowse’s cannot be found in any edition of the book. The ship’s passenger list of the brig ‘Resolution’ shows two brothers - one married before boarding and the other unmarried although his future wife was also a passenger (at 1841 census she was living in the household of her sister and husband. However there were in total four brothers (unless one was a cousin) who came to Wisconsin in the same decade. The three brothers in ELBERT-GAYLORD’s letter were JAMES 1841, EDWARD 1846 and THOMAS.
Additional stories: One received verbally either from Mary Fallis (most probably or possibly from AMORITA) suggests that the brother who remained in California decided to build a bridge over a major river and charge prospectors to cross it and so make money that way rather than the riskier mining. Another verbal story indicates that Mary’s ancestors took the land route across the plains and Rockies to the California mother lode country.
