SS8H10 The student will evaluate key post-World War II developments of Georgia from 1945 to 1970.

  1. Analyze the impact of the transformation of agriculture on Georgia’s growth.

  2. Explain how the development of Atlanta, including the roles of mayors William B. Hartsfield and Ivan Allen, Jr., and major league sports, contributed to the growth of Georgia.

  3. Discuss the impact of Ellis Arnall.

SS8G2 The student will explain how the Interstate Highway System, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Georgia’s deep water ports, and the railroads help drive the state’s economy.

  1. Explain how the four transportation systems interact to provide domestic and international goods to the people of Georgia.

Monday/Tuesday Feb 13-14

1. Read pages 424-427 (preview) SS8H10 Scan and write down three things that interested you. (Due by the end of class)


2. Read pages 428-435 SS8H10a, c (Due by the end of class) Classwork Grade

  • It’s Your Turn activity pg. 435

  • Writing: Imagine you live in Georgia during this time period. Pick one of the following leaders to write a letter to: Carl Sanders or Lester Maddox. In your letter give at least three reasons you support him or don’t support him based on the textbook. You must cite evidence from the textbook in your letter.

  • Using photos: Look at the pictures on pages 432, 434, and 435. Use 5 adjectives to describe each picture.


Wednesday/Thursday Feb 15-16

Explain to students the rarity of African-American participation in national sports leagues during this period in history and that it took the actions of individuals, like Jackie Robinson to bring about the change.



Work period: Trading Cards: (Due by the end of class)

  • Small Group (4-6) arranged in a circle

  • Each student within the group will select a different person of the unit (William Hartsfield, Ivan Allen, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Ellis Arnall) with which to create a baseball card.

  • Students will place a picture of the person on the blank side of an index card.

  • Students will write the stats of the person on the lined side of the card – indicating how the person contributed to the development of Atlanta and the greater growth of Georgia.

Students will trade cards throughout the period to take notes on the details of each on a sheet of paper in their notebooks. Student’s notes will be handed in to the teacher at the end of class and used as a quiz grade. Each person should have at least 3-5 facts about their life and at least 2 ways they impacted Georgia in order to receive a 100%.

Friday Feb 17/Wednesday Feb 22

Opening: How was Hank Aaron influential in Georgia?

1. Georgia History Treasure Hunt. Georgia History Treasure Hunt will be 25 extra credit points added to your quarter final grade if completed correctly. (Due by February 27)
2. Between 1940 and 1970 the Atlanta metropolitan area saw an increase in population from approximately 442,294 to 1,390,164. Interestingly, sports and politics combined to help make the Atlanta Metro Area and attractive place to live. In a paragraph for each, describe how the following contributed to that growth: William Hartsfield, Ivan Allen, Jr. Ellis Arnall, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Hawks.
In order to receive full credit you must use evidence from the text for each topic. You should have a total of six paragraphs with at least 3 reasons each topic contributed to the growth of Atlanta. This is a daily grade. (Due by the end of class)

**A significant change in Georgia agriculture after World War II occurred when the state produced a greater variety of cash crops.
**William B. Hartsfield’s importance to aviation in Georgia happened when he began promoting aviation in the 1920s and worked to build airports in Georgia.

Complete the chart “Georgia’s Four Major Transportation Systems” (Appendix 2) gathering facts and analyzing Georgia’s four major transportation systems.
After you have this information produced on the chart, analyze the goods/products listed Goods and Products: “Coming and Going” (Appendix 3) and determine the most efficient means of getting them from point of origin to point of destination.
