Sunday, June 3, is "Lemonade Day Maine 2012"! "Lemonade Day" is a FREE, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand. It began in Houston, Texas, in 2007. Since then it has grown from 2,700 kids to 120,000 kids in 31 cities across America and Canada in 2011 – including ours!

Kids create their own lemonade stand and sell cups of lemonade on the side of the road, outside their homes, as part of a state-wide "Lemonade Day Maine 2012" effort on Sunday, June 3...it's as easy (and fun) as that!

The foremost objective of "Lemonade Day" is to empower youth to take ownership of their lives and become productive members of society – the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow. Each child that registers for the FREE program receives a backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the 14 lessons of "Lemonade Day", like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some.

Teen Adventure Summer Camp
Last summer, the Westbrook Community Center put together a Teen Adventure Camp geared towards teenagers in grades 6, 7, 8 and 9. The premise of the program was to provide campers with an experience that appealed to persons of their age, maturity and interest. Campers made expedition trips to Emerald Pool and Magic Falls for whitewater rafting. The program tried to structure the every-day activities around the need for ‘independence’, yet still have the supervision piece that is necessary.

We'd like to give you better detail about what we are planning to do for Teen Adventure Camp this summer, which will run from June 25-August 17. First and foremost is to design and carry out a camp that has teens outside and involved in every-day adventures – such as Cairn’s Leadership School, kayaking and hiking.

We still plan to do community service at the free lunch site on Reserve Street and engage in games and activities at the fields and outdoor pool. But, because of space issues at the Westbrook Community Center, we've decided to find additional space for our teenagers, and thus approached Mission Possible Teen Center about utilizing their space for some of our activities and as a possible ‘base camp’.

Campers would have a defined, dedicated space there that would allow them to utilize a full kitchen, meet in an air-conditioned space that is centrally located so that they can walk to some of their adventures and, at times, utilize their computer lab, ping pong and billiards tables.

Mission Possible IS a drop-in center for teenagers in Westbrook. However, Teen Adventure Camp is a supervised, separate program from that. Counselors – led by veteran staffer Tyler Crosby as the Teen Adventure Camp Supervisor, will be with the campers and supervise all programming. Campers won’t be utilizing the Teen Center as a ‘drop-in’ facility. In fact, the drop-in center is not open until 12:30 pm and our programming will have campers out of the building by that time (except for rainy days).

The plan is to start camp each morning at the Westbrook Community Center, depart for Mission Possible at 8:30 am, make breakfast as a group in their kitchen, and go over the day's Road Map. At the end of the day, campers will return to Mission Possible and be available for pick-up between 4-5:30 pm.

Lunch and snacks for campers will be provided each day.

We think this a unique, positive opportunity for the teenagers of our community and we are greatly looking forward to its implementation this summer!
