Ref: Iowa City Press – Citizen, Iowa City, IA, 24 Aug. 1921, pg. 5 – Mrs. Martin’s Death IS Sad – At half-after seven this morning, Mrs. Almond D. Martin, a young wife and mother, passed away under peculiarly sad circumstances.
Death ever spells sorrow, and is painful to friends to read or record, but there are times when the dread visitant’s coming to a household seems inexpressibly grievous, an unbearably great burden of woe. The passing of this beloved young woman is one of that unusually sorrowful type.
Mrs. Martin’s life, forth-eight hours before, seemed assured of brightness and joy, in that to her had come a wee lad and lassie, on Monday morning, August 22nd. She, herself, selected the name of Phyllis for the girl, who arrived at 7:30 and of Robert, for the twin brother, born a quarter of an hour afterwards. Rejoicing in the advent of these bits of human sunshine in a mother’s life, Mrs. Martin anticipated many a glad year to follow, and all seemed well, until Monday afternoon, as eventide approached. Suddenly she became a victim of eclempsis-convulsions that often brings a tragic climax to a mother’s supreme sacrifice. These, in her case, were recurrent from 4:30 that afternoon, until Tuesday morning, about 1 o’clock. Then in natural sequence, came coma. Thereafter, despite the continued and continuous efforts of a skilled physician, and trained nurses, this comatose state prevailed, and the mysterious and fatal affliction baffled, as it has many a time before, defied, the ablest of medical and surgical scientists.
Flaming fever claimed her as its own, as Tuesday waxed and waned, and the new-come morning arrived today. At seven-thirty, the brave, but futile, battle ended, and the young woman fell asleep.
Mrs. Martin would have been 32 had she lived until November 20. She was born on the old-time Graham farm in Scott Township and was the daughter of Mr. Robert Graham, deceased and Mrs. Nancy Graham, who survives.
As Elsie Graham, she attended the eighth grade and high schools of Iowa City, and was reared to a lovely young womanhood in this community. She was married here to Mr. A. D. Martin on Sep. 24, 1913. To them were born three children, Betty, who will be seven next month, and her new brother and sister. The two tiny tots, of course, cannot, for years, appreciate the terrible loss that has befallen them. To dainty little Betty and her stricken father, the community will tender condolences, deep and sincere. Even while expressing sorrow and sympathy, words are of slight value at such an hour, but they voice affection and sorrow, from the depths of the heart, even though they cannot banish the crushing weight that bows the heads of the grieving ones today. Beside the young husband, who is a trusted member of the Rock Island Railway company staff, at the Wright street station; and the three children, there also survive the mother, Mrs. Nancy Graham; a sister, Lulu, and three brothers, Dr. L. P. Graham, Albert Graham, and Harry Graham, all of Iowa City.
Sharing their grief will be Mrs. Martin’s co-workers in social and religious circles. She was a tried and true member of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine, the Homesteaders, and the Presbyterian Church. In each of these groups of appreciative men and women, Elsie (Graham) Martin was highly esteemed by one and all.
Hers was a sweet and lovable nature. Her heart was of pure gold, and their friends who have known her all her life are those who know her best and will be the most deeply-stricken, as they mourn long and deeply.

She is at rest. She sleeps somewhere beneath the shadow of the clouds, careless alike of sunshine of storm. She carried tenderly in her heart the frailties of others in human life. She walked in the highways of eternal right all her life. She has obeyed the mandate which sooner or later must come to all. She has laid down life’s duties, responsibilities and cares, and at rest in the cemetery of the beautiful city in which she lived so long. She sleeps on the bands of that beautiful river, where since her early childhood, she lived, labored, loved, and beloved by all who knew her, sleeping the last long sleep, while the garland of earthly honors and love, that surrounded her in life, have but changed to a wreath of fadeless beauty in that place beyond the shadow.
We do not know whether the grave is the end or the beginning of life -- whether it is a wall beyond which we cannot go, or whether it is a door, leading out to a beautiful everlasting eternity, but if the latter, we may feel sure that she is there. She is gone from the sight of her many friends, and from earth forever, but she will be remembered long by those who knew her best -- as long as time shall last, for her many acts of love and kindness.
The heath is now her pillow, and the tombstone will soon mark her last resting place; but what are touches them and they become unsightly. Time presses them in his they? Cold and inanimate, time rude grasp and they are gone, but the memory of her life and noble acts of kindness will live, and will remain fresh in the memory of her many friends, and will survive even the accidents of time. And now while we stand in the midst of the silent city of the dead, where we find in almost every square rod some relative or fiend whom we knew and loved in life, and while we weave a chaplet of flowers, and strew the beauties of nature about her grave, we are pleased to know that the memory of her noble life and kindly acts will live to the end of time. -- A Friend of the Family.

Ref: Ltr to PRO dtd 14 Feb. 1962, Iowa City, IA from Alice S. Bradley (Mrs. B. Graham Bradley) 305 Summit St. – My dear Mr. Orr – Yes, this is our lineage and I am very glad to help in any way. First of all, I think your greatest help could come from a man who could come from a man who lives in Chicago. He is Mr. Maro Johnson, 5528 Hyde Park Blv’d, Chicago 37, IL. I telephoned our University alumni office today and confirmed it. His mother was a Love and I believe a sister of Annis Love – (Mrs. Daniels).
I married Benjamin Graham Bradley, son of Caroline S. and Abner Bradley, grandson of Benjamin Graham. So my knowledge of the family is “spotty” and not very clear. Your information about the family seems accurate to me. The Albert Grahams live here – He is Bob’s son – They have 2 sons, Don & John and several grandchildren. They own a large cleaning business and are a fine family. I think just Albert Graham, Iowa City would reach him. It is the Paris Cleaners.
One more who would be glad to help is my husband’s brother – Atwood Bradley. He lives in Ontario, CA – 5600 Mission Blv’d, #9. But the one who would know more about the Love’s would be Maro Johnson – He had one sister Eliza who died within the last two or 3 years. I think. I’d suggest that you write him as soon as possible.
Mrs. Daniels was our neighbor and we thought a great deal of her. She had 3 daughters and two or three sons. Her daughters were Jennie (sons (2) Gage and Joe (a cripple) and a younger daughter “Love Daniels” – This daughter was very beautiful – married a very wealthy man and in later years took care of some of the family – especially one sister I can’t remember but who lived in Omaha. Love had two daughters – Marion and Ruth – Both died in their early marriage life. Love died about 5 years ago.
Maro may be able to direct you to others – I hope this will help a little. I think it is a wonderful thing for you to do. My husband died in 1939 – We have one son – Ingalls Bradley – married to Helen Wright and lives in Rochester, NY. They have 2 children – Graham (12 yrs.) and Christine (8 yrs.)
Thank you for writing to me and call on me again if you need to. Sincerely, Alice S. Bradley. I’ve just remembered the other sister – Libby.

She was a devoted Mother, living a quiet home life, and she loved the out-of-doors.
Up to the past year, Mrs. Graham had enjoyed good health and while she was not in the best of condition her death came as a sudden shock to all.
Funeral services are to be held this (Thursday) afternoon, October 12th, at 2 o'clock, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hermann, who resides southwest of Hinckley, Rev. Paul Hendricks officiating, and interment is to be in the Brook Park Cemetery.
The community joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow.
