Ref: Email from Duncan Love dtd. 31 Aug. 2004 – I grew up in Cleveland, OH and went to Oberlin for college. My first job was with a nonprofit research firm that worked exclusively for the U.S. Army. That was interrupted with two years in the U. S. Army as a draftee, doing exactly the same thing I was doing for the nonprofit. I had a couple of years on the Army contract for a failing profit-not-making firm, and then transferred to a Navy nonprofit group. I worked there 30 years, and followed with some part-time work after “retirement”. Actually, I did not go into full retirement until the start of last year. Nina and I started looking for a retirement group last fall and visited Oberlin. We signed on, expecting to be called in two or three years. They called us in six months! We sold the house, got movers, packed and left town in about six weeks! So here we are. This retirement home is not connected with the college in any manner what so ever, BUT the college accepts us as auditors. No tests, and no papers. I guess you would say that everything is fine if we don’t interfere with the students and don’t put an extra load on the teachers. I do not know the names of the parents of Alexander (1782-1849) and William (1784-1856). None of his grandchildren knew who they were. My father knew and visited with all but one of his uncles and aunts, and none of them knew. They did not know what part of Ireland he had come from. This is somewhat surprising since several of these family members were interested in their family history. Perhaps they got interested when it was too late. My aunt was interested, and she thought that she knew where the original Love family had lived. She even went to Ireland to visit the particular house. The house was still owned by a Love family. She knocked on the door, but no one answered. Then she went next door to see if the neighbors might know anything about the Love family. BOY DID THEY EVER!!! Those Loves were the worst neighbors ever! They were just no good, etc., etc. I was never able to find out where she went or why she thought that these were our relatives. It did not help that her traveling companion was still collapsing in hysterical laughter when she told this story. On the other hand, there was a Presbyterian minister in Stranorlar Parish on the east edge of County Donegal, a minister named Joseph Love who lived from 1767 to 1807. He is a tempting target for our common ancestor. This date is particularly tempting as it would allow the lands and legacies to be settled before Alexander and William came to America. I have always thought it might have been his death that released funds used to pay for the travel to America. To my knowledge, this aspect has never been investigated. There is a second possible connection here. My ancestor, Joseph Love, married Jane Thompson who had moved with her parents from Ireland to Knox county in Ohio. Apparently, the two families knew of each other, or perhaps were friends, when they were in Ireland. The Thompson’s family is fairly well located, about 12 to 15 miles west of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. Their location would put them within a reasonable distance from Stranorlar. When the third and fourth sons got around to naming their children there were already too many grandchildren with the same names. William, Alexander, Thomas and Joseph Love’s are all the Ulster area of Ireland. My father thought that all people named Love were related. You certainly see these names again and again in our families.
