Ref: Democratic Standard; Coshocton, OH; pg. 4, 3 Oct. 1890 -- Plainfield Penciling -- Mr. James Love died at the residence of his nephew, Joseph Love, last Friday afternoon, after attaining the ripe old age of 82 years. Mr. Love was born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1808, and came to this country in 1836. He spent a short time in Philadelphia, PA, after which, he came to Coshocton county and ever since resided here. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Blackford at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday following, at 11 o'clock a.m.

Ref: Maro Johnson – James Love was probably born 1811 or 1812, came to Philadelphia with his brothers in 1832 and went later to Linton Township in Coshocton Co., OH, where he became a farmer. On October 21, 1858, he was married to Nancy Rambo by the Reverend R. W. Marquis. She may have been the daughter of Peter Rambo, who served in the War of 1812 from Linton Township and later operated a ferry across Wills Creek near old Plainfield. James died September 26, 1890, and is buried at Boden. He mentions his wife Nancy in his will, but she may have died before him, as he spent the last years of his life at the home of his nephew, Joseph, in Plainfield. There were no children. The Rev. Marquis was the first settled pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Linton Township and served from 1852 to 1859. He is buried in the church cemetery.
Ref: Philadelphia, 1800-1850 Passenger & Immigration Lists – James Love arrived in Philadelphia on 23 Aug. 1836 on the Ship Amy. He was 26 years of age. Ref: Sherry Cornelius - According to Hayes’ Military Registration Card, Hayes A. gave his last known address as 756 Greene Street, Marietta, OH. His occupation was working for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a railroad fix-it man, his employer was H. R. Brady, and he received an honorable mention from the Railroad for a job well done. Hayes was a tall slender man with light blue eyes and red thinning hair. (His draft card states that he was bald). The Monroe Twp., Muskingum Co., OH, Otsego Cem., lists his unit as Co. E, 6th Infantry.
Hayes Cornelius was listed in the April 27th, 1910 census of Knox Twp., Guernsey Co., OH as being 22, no occupation, living with his Father Wilbert Orren Cornelius and his Mother, Ida. By the 1920 Knox Twp., Guernsey Co., OH census, Hayes was no longer living with his parents, since he died in 1918 during WW1. By 1910 and prior to September of 1917, he moved away from home. He then entered the Army on 19 Sep. 1917 and served in WW #1 where he was killed in action on 12 Sep. 1918 in France. While driving a Federal truck that had broken down, he was attempting to fix the truck, when he was shot and received fatal injuries from shrapnel, killing him on the battlefield in France. His body was buried on 15 Sep. 1918, 3 days after he was killed, 75 yards East of the German Red Cross Hospital, in a wooden box with his uniform on, dog tags attached to his body and on the cross marker. On 28 Apr. 1919, his body was removed from grave #26, in Vieville, M et M, 52 NE, 366.8, E. 240.65 N and transported to Grave #115, Sec. #6, Plot #3, St. Mihiel, American Red Cross Cemetery No. 1233, Thiaucourt, M et M (France). On May 9th, 1921, Hayes’ body was again removed from his grave in Thiaucourt, France, and shipped to Ohio at the request of his Father, Wilbert Orren Cornelius, where he is now buried in the Otsego Methodist Church Cemetery in Muskingum County, OH.. A full military funeral was given for Hayes at the time of his burial at the Otsego Methodist Church Cemetery.
Hayes never married but had an affair with Irma A. Simmons which produced a child, Herbert Reginald Cornelius, b. 9 Sep. 1916, in Coshocton, OH. Irma was also seeing another man at the time of her affair with Hayes, playing one man against the other, we believe that the other man could have been Walter Larntz since she married Walter in 1917. Hayes left home prior to Irma’s marriage to Walter Larntz, we believe to Marietta, OH; according to his military records, he lists his last known address as 756 Green St., Marietta, OH. Since Hayes listed no wife or children as being heirs, we think he never knew about the birth of his son, Herb (Herbert).
Ref: (Sherry Cornelius) It was believed that Hayes Cornelius never knew he had a son until letters written to Irma Simmons while he was in the service proved otherwise. Irma used these letters in court to give their son Herb Cornelius the rights to the Cornelius name and to prove that Hayes was the father. Hayes Cornelius would not recognize Herb as their grandson.
Ref: Sherry Cornelius learned that Hayes received the following medals for serving and dying during WW #1: Purple Heart, France Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Hayes draft card indicated that Hayes had red hair and of slender build.

He was an excellent auto mechanic and worked for a Ford Dealership in Houston, TX, for several years. After leaving the Ford Dealership, he worked at Straus Systems in Houston, TX, also as an auto mechanic and retired some years later.
He died 6 Feb. 1988, while visiting his sister-in-law, Ruth Crowley, in Pembroke Pines, FL. While sitting at the table peeling an orange, he fell over onto the floor and never regained consciousness, dying enroute to a local hospital in Florida from an apparent busted aneurysm. His body was flown back to Livingston, TX, where he and his wife, Mary, made their final home. He’s buried in a cemetery in Houston, TX.
Mr. Harold Welker, son of Leola May (Cornelius), Herb’s Aunt, recalls two incidents about Herb in their earlier years while going to school: “In those days, the high school baseball teams traveled to play other schools in the players’ private cars. I remember Herb driving the team to play in his Dad’s Oakland Touring Car. I remember that it had “disc” wheels. At another time, I remember Herb was the chauffeur using his Dad’s car for John Marlatt and Mary Baird for a school wiener roast.”

Ref: Democratic Standard, Coshocton, Ohio; pg. 1; 7 June 1901 -- A Good Woman Called Away -- Mrs. Margaret Love, the revered wife of Mr. Joseph Love, died on Friday of last week, at the family home in Linton township, after a lingering illness, resulting from dropsy. Her age was about fifty-five years, and her death is mourned as a personal loss by all who know her. Her gentle nature and amiable disposition added to her sterling christian character, won for her the affection of friends and the esteem of all, and her death, while not unexpected, came as a shock to the community of which she had long been a member, and which her pure life had honored. A good neighbor, kindly and helpful to all, her influence for good will be missed in the circles in which in life she moved. Her maiden name was Margaret Rusk. She became the wife of Joseph Love, August 22nd, 1861. Eight children were born to them five daughters and three sons. Four daughters, with the three sons and the sorely afflicted husband and father, survive to mourn the loss of an affectionate, self-sacrificing mother, and loving and faithful wife. Truly hers was a noble life, full of good works, and though she rests from earth's labors, in the sleep of death, the memory of her good deeds live after her, to cheer the hearts of sorrowing ones left behind, whose grief and consolation in the assurance that what to them is so great a loss is to her an eternal gain.. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Blackford, last Sunday, following which the remains were placed at rest in the grave at West Lafayette.
Ref: Maro Johnson – Joseph was born in Philadelphia March 1, 1836, removed with his parents to Ohio in 1846. In 1855, he became a teacher in the county schools when not occupied in farm duties. After the death of his father he took charge of the farm and continued so until about 1900 when he moved to Coshocton where he was appointed librarian of the public library. He died March 29, 1923.
Mr. Love married in 1861, Margaret Rusk, daughter of William Rusk, a native of County Antrim, Ireland. Mrs. Love died April 29, 1898. He subsequently married Sarah Miller.
