He was a native of Ireland and was early left an orphan. He came to this country in boyhood and to this city in 1855 where he has followed the carpenter business. His son, Robert was killed a year ago last April by the falling of the wall of the Market Hall building, when it burned, and this has been a terrible grief to him. His health began to fail and for six months past he has been disabled and at the age of 56 has passed away. He leaves a widow, two sons and a daughter and his son Robert’s widow to mourn his loss. He has been a hard working earnest man faithful to his conviction of duty. The Presbyterian Church was full on Sunday afternoon of those who came to do honor to his memory.”
Dr. Maro Johnson, writing to his son, said of Mr. Love: “As sterling and honest a man as walks”.
Ref: Iowa City Daily Press, Saturday, 11 July 1874 -- Funeral Notice -- The funeral of the late Joseph Love will take place on next Sabbath, 12 July at 3:30 p.m. from the North Presbyterian Church. The public and friends of the family are invited to attend.
Ref: Iowa City Daily Press, Monday, 13 July 1874 -- In Memoriam -- The funeral of the late Joseph Love transpired yesterday from the North Presbyterian Church.
A large number of friends of this estimable gentleman attended the services, which were unusually impressive.
Rev. Mr. Osmond preached a most eloquent sermon from the 14th chapter of St. John, and few eyes were not bedewed with tears when he had concluded.
Mr. Love was one of our best, yet least ostentatious, citizens.
Born in Ireland, he crossed to America some 40 years ago, a youth of eighteen, without a single friend in the New World. In Philadelphia, he learned the carpenter trade which he followed until a quite recent period. He came to this city fifteen years ago and since that time has done much toward improving Iowa City, and gathered around him a host of warm friends.
A through gentleman, a devout christian, a kind father, a loving husband, his name will ever be cherish in our memories.
Ref: Daily Iowa State Press, Monday, April 2, 1900, pg. 5 -- Mrs. Jane Love died at her home on Governor Street yesterday at 3:30 o'clock. She was 74 years of age and the widow of the late Joseph Love. Mrs. Love was a pioneer resident of Johnson County having lived here since 1855. Two children, Mrs. Guy Johnson, James Love, both of this city survive to mourn the loss of a good Mother. The funeral will take place from the family residence, Wednesday, forenoon at 10 o'clock.

Ref: Maro Johnson – The father of Ann Love was Joseph, who was born in Ireland June 11, 1818. After the death of their parents, whose given names are not known, Joseph and three older brothers, Alexander, James and William came to this country, having sailed from Londonderry on July 1, 1832, and landed in Philadelphia on August 20.
Prior to this two other Love brothers, uncles of the above young men and probably brothers of their father, had arrived in Coshocton County, Ohio. They were William and Alexander Love, who settled in Linton Township and operated a small distillery on a stream called Bacon Run. (Coshocton Co., OH History)
This William Love was born in 1784. He married Sarah Logan, probably in Ireland. She was born in 1791, and died February 20, 1865. About 1855, they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, with their daughter Annis, who married J. B. Daniels. William Love died August 29, 1856, aged seventy-two years. He and his wife are buried on the Daniels lot in Oakland Cemetery at Iowa City, John Co., IA. The above dates are as shown on their gravestones. In addition to their daughter Annis, born 1825, they had a daughter, Jane, born 1818, who married Benjamin Graham, a son, Hiram, and possibly others. Nothing more is known of Alexander Love of this generation.
On August 24, 1837, with consent of brother William, Joseph Love, aged nineteen, was “apprenticed to John F. McNabb, house carpenter, of Philadelphia, to learn the art, trade and mysteries of a house carpenter and after the manner of an apprentice to serve the said John F. McNabb from the day of the date hereof, for and during the full term of two years from August 24, 1837, next ensuing. During all which time, the said apprentice doth covenant and promise, and is hereby bound that he will serve his master faithfully; keep his secrets, and obey his lawful commands, that he will do him no damage, nor see it done by others, without giving him notice thereof, that he will preserve and not waste his goods, nor lend then unlawfully, that he will not contract matrimony within the said term, that he will not play at cards, dice or any other unlawful game, that he will neither buy nor well, without license from his master, and that he will not absent himself day or night, from his master’s houses; but that in all things he will behave himself as an honest and faithful apprentice ought to do, during the said term.
And the said master, on his part, doth covenant and promise, and is hereby bound to the best of his judgment and opportunities, to act as a parent to the said apprentice in the art or mystery of a house carpenter and that he will procure and provide for him sufficient meat, drink and lodging fitting for an apprentice during the said term; and will give him at the rate of Thirty dollars each and every year payable quarter yearly.”
“Corrections: A master may, by law, correct and chastise is apprentice for neglect or other misbehavior, so that it be done with moderation, but he cannot depute another person to give such correction.” Signed: Joseph Love, William Love & John F. McNabb
“Sealed, delivered and acknowledged before the subscriber, one of the Alderman in and for the City of Philadelphia. John Burns
It is certain that the apprenticeship was completed satisfactorily.
On May 23, 1840, we find Joseph Love at LaSalle, IL, giving p his allegiance to Queen Victoria of Great Britain and declaring his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States. From LaSalle he returned to Coshocton County, OH, probably attracted there by the presence of his uncles and his brothers, James and Alexander, who had come out from Philadelphia. But there was another attraction, for on February 6, 1845, he married Jane Love, eight years his junior, and daughter of John Osborn Love and his wife, Eleanor, who had come over from County Donegal in 1838. During the next ten years, Joseph worked at his trade in Ohio and during that period his four children were born.
In 1855 the family moved to Iowa City, Iowa (then the State Capital), possibly with the idea that there would be more building work in a new community. The children were then nine, seven, five, and three years old. They traveled by steamboat from some river point in Ohio to Muscatine, Iowa, and then by overland stage to Iowa City, about forty miles.
There were two Presbyterian churches in Iowa City at that time, following a cleavage in the national organization in 1837. They were known as the Old School and the New School churches. Mr. Love became a member of the latter and eventually an elder, and was such when the congregation was disbanded in 1870 after the coalition of the two national bodies. He then joined what had been the Old School church, also known locally as the “North Church. Sometime earlier services in the New Church had been abandoned and, with two other trustees, his name was signed to a rental lease dated June 9, 1868, providing for use of the building by the State Historical Society.
Mr. Love established himself as a house carpenter and contractor in Iowa City and continued as such until his last illness. He died July 10, 1874, and is buried in Oakland cemetery at Iowa City with his wife and three sons beside him. A number of houses built by Mr. Love, including his own, still stand in Iowa City in 1953.
Mrs. Love was born in Ireland, February 15, 1826. After the death of her husband, she shared her house with the Johnsons and was a member of the family until her death April 1, 1900.

Osmond, Minister to Guy Johnson b. 14 Feb. 1848, Roscoe, d. 1 Feb. 1916, Iowa City, 1869, Michigan State University Graduate, U of IA graduate, s/o Maro & Eliza (Rue) Johnson.
Ref: State University of Iowa (SUI), Alumni Office wrote that Guy Johnson (no middle name) of Iowa City, IA received an LLB degree in 1875, from SUI after receiving a BS degree in 1869 from Michigan Agricultural College. He died 1 Feb. 1916.
Ref: Maro Johnson – The ancestry of Ann Jane Love, wife of Guy Johnson, is complicated by the fact that the birth name of her father, her mother, her maternal grandfather and her maternal grandmother was Love. Some of their descendants have been of the opinion that they originated in Scotland, and came to Northern Ireland during the great migration in the seventeenth century. At the time they came to America there had been only one intermarriage, so far as now known, among the three families, that of Ann’s maternal grandparents.
It is thought that all were Presbyterians, with one possible exception, which will be mentioned later, and all were residents of County Donegal in extreme northwestern Ireland.
Ref: Maro Johnson – Guy Johnson was born at Roscoe, Coshocton Co., OH, Feb. 14, 1848. His mother died before he was seven and he had little recollection of her. He and his baby sister were cared for in his early youth by a friendly young neighbor and probably by one or both of his grandmothers and by his older sister. There was a canal through the town with an aqueduct and a basin which was a big factor in supplying amusement for boys both summer and winter and also plenty of hills for sledding. In 1866, when he was eighteen, he was sent to the recently opened Agricultural College (now known as Michigan State) at Lansing, MI, where he graduated with the class of 1869. He seems to have gone directly to Pike Co., IL, where he spent the following summer working on his Uncle Roderick’s farm. Some time previously his father and entered or purchased government land in three Iowa counties, a total of about six hundred acres, and guy was sent to Ackley, Iowa to look over this unbroken land with a view to getting it in shape for farming. However, there was not yet a demand for additional land for farming purposes in that section of Iowa and it was several years later before it was gotten ready for farming and began to earn an income. After teaching a country school for two winters, Guy went to Iowa City in 1871 to learn the trade of carpenter with his father’s old Ohio friend, Joseph Love, who had earlier removed to Iowa and become a carpenter contractor. Mr. Love died in 1874 and Guy spent the following year in the University of Iowa Law School, graduating L.L.B. in 1875. Following graduation he resumed his carpenter work until about 1885, after which he gave most of his time to the management of the Iowa farms. In 1876, he married Ann Jane Love. They became the parents of two children. He was a kind and companionable husband and father, always ready with an encouraging word or help. In personal appearance he was about five feet, eight and a half inches tall, a little on the stout side in later years, light complexion with even features and wore a small mustache.
Mrs. Johnson, Ann Love, was born in Roscoe, Ohio, November 14, 1850, and came with her parents to Iowa City in 1855. She attended the public schools and studied for two years in the preparatory department of the State University. She cared for her father in his last long illness and was especially remembered in his will for this service. She was a kind and faithful person, but burdened with illness during her later years. She died Jan. 14, 1913. Mr. Johnson, much broken up by her death, died Feb. 1, 1916. Both are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City.
Ref: Maro Johnson - From the March 7, 1916 issue of the M.A.C. Record – Dear Editor: A recent issue of the RECORD brings the sad tidings of the passing of Guy Johnson. It is close well nigh to half a century that I am now looking to the day when I first met Mr. Johnson. It was in the early spring of 1868, he being a well –poised junior and the writer highly nervous and fatigued with wrestling with the entrance examinations. “Guy” – we all called him by that short name and there has been no other in my acquaintance, impressed me from that first day when we all met in the Chapel for the first morning prayers of the college year. He was so good-natured and with all so kindly and approachable. Not many days after we met again in the “gymnasium”. This factor in the educational equipment consisted mainly in a pair of swinging rings and Guy was swinging as I had never seen anyone before, now head up and then in a flash tied up like a knot, and with a long swing with head down he left the rings – I thought he was going to his death, when in an instant he had landed safely in a pile or hole of dust, while the many freshman were at first goggle-eyed and then worshipful.
Mr. Johnson impressed me chiefly in two ways, as to his ability as a ball player and the apparent ease with which he could write elegant English. From the present point of view you may wonder that I do not put the talent for composition before that for manly sport.
In those days early in the history of the young college the athletic grounds began anywhere north of Saint’s Rest and was bounded in the opposite directions by the aurora borealis. The home plate, minus the rubber, was near a group of oak trees then recovering from the shock of decapitation and the outfield showed the disturbing effects of a patent stump puller. Guy was the captain of the team, if not the president of the baseball association. The uniform consisted of a red cap with a long visor and a black belt once shiny, upon the outside of which was a white star and B.B.C. The players were all stars. It is not known just where Guy shone the best but his catching was phenomenal, of course, bare-handed – no one wore gloves excepting possibly Professor Cook, and his batting the wonder of the state. It was no ordinary bat that Guy wielded, for with the slow underhanded balls that Dick Haigh delivered one was able to carry much weight against the sphere. It was “old Hickory” that did its share of the work. This was a bat small in girth but great in longitude and had long, long since lost its smoothness, if it ever had any, as it had been weathering under the oak trees for doubtless several years and taken in only at the end of the season.
As I look back there is an inclination to the opinion that the pitcher was in league with Guy when he came up with “Old Hickory.” The left fielder ran back and away went the sphere over his head while the batter ambled around the bases, the little audience under the trees manifesting hearty approval with voice and hands and feet.
But it was in another sphere of college activities that Guy also shone and that led to his holding the library senior detail, the most coveted of them all. The students of the present day do not realize how much of the important work of aid and instruction of the lower classes was detailed to the seniors. Neither do they know experimentally how small the old college was in those early formative years, and the growth that has taken place since, in the library. After placing the county papers in their files upon the great reading tables there were not duties enough to fill the three hours that the library was open to students when they could go and read of the doings at home, etc. There was an assortment of books from Plutarchs’ Lives to the unbound volumes of the Atlantic Monthly and possibly the shelves held some books that recorded the lengthy labors of the Congress and the Department of the State.
Now this all means that Guy had an opportunity to feast upon the best literature for, of course, Shakespeare and Milton and works of that type were at his hands – and he made good use of them. The way we knew this was from observation in the library and by listening in the chapel, for did not each junior and senior compose, commit and proclaim four orations yearly before the whole student body and even the freshmen soon knew that attention to details here would pay in good coin later on in the course.
It was at those public rhetorical that Guy added many laurels to his fame as a beautiful writer. There were better speakers, for he felt more at home near the plate “receiving” for Dick or Fred or throwing a liner to second, but he was also the admiration of all for his fine flow of English.
It was not unnatural that he became a lawyer and it is safe to write that he made a hit with each of his charmingly prepared briefs. How many will think of him as a genial friend and feel a loss that lasts. Bryon D. Halstad, ’76, New Brunswick, NJ, 1 Mar. 1916.

Ref: Ltr. from Jane T. Irish who was a sister of Gilbert Irish, Editor of the Iowa City Press. Gilbert moved to Oakland, CA in 1882 and continued in newspaper work on the San Francisco Call and the Daily Alta California. Later he was U. S. Ambassador to Port of San Salvador. Jane writes that Maro Johnson was a graduate of State University of Iowa. He died in Chicago, I believe in March last (1962). Had lived in the South, FL and VA for many years. Left, I believe a son and daughter. He visited here, (about 3 years ago), an old friend of mine, who was his school mate in early days. He wanted her to go back South with him, but she would not do so as she had passed the 80th milestone. I really think she had regrets later for she became very melancholy and eventually lost her mind and soon passed away in a nursing home. She had been married to an SUI graduate, a druggist, who was a widower. They married after 65 yrs. of age. After three years, he died suddenly of a heart attack and she returned to Iowa City to care for an ailing older sister. Strange what fate hands out along life's pathway, isn't it?"
Ref: Maro Johnson – Maro Johnson was born at Iowa City, IA, Nov. 27, 1877. He was educated in the public schools in that county seat town, in which the population during his youth was a little over 7000. The family consisted of his parents, his sister, and his grandmother, Jane Love, widow of Joseph. On completion of his high school course in 1894, he entered the Engineering Department of the State University at Iowa City. This was a small school at the time, having in 1894 but two instructors who devoted their full time to engineering subjects and about twenty-five students. He was the only civil engineering graduate in June 1898. During the two previous summers he had assisted the City Engineer, Mr. Charles S. Magowan, who was also the Assistant Professor in the College, and continued to do so for a few months following his graduation – salary twenty cents per hour worked. As an instructorship which had been promised him was not authorized, he secured employment in October 1898 with the Illinois Central Railroad Company as a masonry inspector at Chebanse and Gilman, Illinois, and with the exception of three months in 1899 continued with that company until his retirement Nov. 30, 1947, having been successively Rodman, Instrument man,

Assistant Engineer, Resident Engineer, Assistant Engineer of Bridges, Engineer of Bridges ad Buildings, Resident Engineer, Assistant Engineer and Principal Assistant Engineer. With the exception of about two years in Indianapolis, practically all of this time was spent in Chicago, interspersed with frequent road trips and with temporary assignments on line during earlier years.

Mr. Johnson is a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Railway Engineering Association, the American Railway Bridge and Building Association, the Western Society of Engineers, and the Society of the Sigma.
On September 19, 1905, while living in Indianapolis, Maro Johnson married Helen L. Schneider of Defiance, Ohio. She was born in Defiance in 1881 but at the time of her marriage was employed in Chicago as an accountant and bookkeeper. After the death of her mother in 1884, she had her five year old sister came under the care of their grandmother Seibert, who managed the Schneider household until their father’s second marriage in 1889. The following year the family moved to Toledo, Ohio. While there the two girls attended a convent school, but entered the public schools upon the return of the family to Defiance in 1894. Helen graduated from high school in 1898 and after a summer normal course taught country schools for three years. Then followed a business course at Lafayette, Indiana, and entrance to the business world in Chicago early in 1903.
While M/M Johnson began their married life in Indianapolis they returned to Chicago in late 1906, the Indianapolis work having been completed, and that was their home until Mr. Johnson’s retirement in 1947, when they went to Hammond, Louisiana, for the benefit of Mrs. Johnson’s health. The milder climate was helpful for a time, but could not cure, and she died after long suffering July 19, 1952, and is buried at Iowa City, Iowa.
She was a beautiful woman both in person and in character.
