She was a prominent educator, business woman, Red Cross Officer, 25 year Red Cross Member. Her activities were so numerous -- She probably was the confidante & advisor of more people than any other individual in Decatur.
She placed many people in jobs, not only through her yrs. with the business college personal office and Red Cross but outside these organizations as well.
She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Luella Gulick, Decatur and Mrs. Florence Bedell of St. Paul, MN. {From Decatur Herald Newspaper}
Ref: Mary operated Brown's Business College, Decatur, IL for many years. She was considered a very unusual, efficient and intelligent person. The City of Decatur honored her with an award as Decatur's outstanding and most valued citizen.
Ref: 16 Feb. 1962, Decatur, IL - Mary Love Retiring by Cynthia M. McCormick of the Review Staff - Mary V. Love has sold her Personal Placement Bureau after operating it for 23 years.
Thousands of people in the Decatur area have found professional and semiprofessional jobs through the service Miss Love started in 1928 after she was an instructor at Brown's Business College for 22 years.
Edgar G. Lillpop, a student minister at Findlay and St. Mary's Methodist churches, has purchased the business, located in seven rooms at the Standard Office Building.
Lillpop plans to expand the service to include placement of technically trained persons like engineers, persons interested in administrative work and some domestic help.
In recent years, Miss Love has managed the service from her home at 339 West North Street since arthritis keeps her from getting out much.
She will be 84 in May and says she thinks it's about time she retired from business and got some rest.
As long-time residents of Decatur will tell you, however, Miss Love has never been known for inactivity.
"She is a Doer" a newspaper story said in its headline in 1924. And that was before she opened her placement service and before she became executive secretary of the Macon County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
To many Decatur folks, Miss Love personified the Red Cross theme, "the greatest Mother of them all," during the 25 years she headed the organization here.
She joined the Red Cross board a few months after it was organized in 1916 and became executive secretary in 1932.
From then until her retirement at the end of World War 11, she worked long days at the Red Cross office and at night from her home while peacetime activities like disaster relief expanded to aiding service families and refugees here and abroad, sponsoring blood banks, nurses aides, home nursing and first aid.
During her years with the Red Cross, Miss Love served the placement bureau chiefly in an advisory capacity while a manager and one or two other staff workers carried on the daily business.
Mrs. Nellie L. Ray, 65, has managed the office for the past seven years but she plans to retire about the first of March.
Lillpop will be the active manager and his wife, a general secretary and stenotype operator, will assist in the office.
The couple will move to Decatur in June.
Lillpop, a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University at Bloomington, has been in the ministry five years.
Miss Love says she plans to continue living in Decatur.
"I've been here since about 1900 and I'm not going to move now! Besides Decatur is the best town to live and do business in!" she explained.
She is a native of Champaign County and began her business career as a secretary at Lake Forest College and later worked in the office of the Detroit University Preparatory School.
At Brown's, she became vice principal and head of the shorthand department.
Active in many community organizations, she organized the Business and Professional Women's Club in 1922 and served as its first president.
She has also been active in the YWCA and in the Red Cross work and the Business and Professional Women's group on the state level.
She is a charter member of the BW chapter of the PEO and the Decatur chapter of Zonta International. She has been president of Zonta and the Social Service Club.
In 1934, she was appointed a Civil Works Service administrator for Macon County.

Ref: 8 Feb. 1934 - S. S. Love Dies Sunday Evening - The death of S. S. Love which occurred at his home about 3 miles southwest of Sidney Sunday evening at 7:30 o’clock, came as a surprise to most of our citizens, as few had known of his illness, which was of a week’s duration.
Mr. Love was a man of high character, well liked and respected by all who knew him. He was a friend to everyone and was ever willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a man of few words and many of his acts of kindness were known only to his intimate friends.
He was born at Coshocton, Ohio on Oct. 1, 1851, being a son of Samuel and Deborah Love and came to Sidney township with his parents when one year old, and had lived in his present home for 81 years. He was the last of a family of six children. He had never married.
He is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Mont Gabbert, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Bernard Gulick and Mary Love, Decatur; Mrs. Francis Jordan, Savoy; Miss Florence Love, Firebaugh, SD; Howard of Philo and Clifford of Havana.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon with Rev. H. E. Andrews, pastor of the Philo Presbyterian church officiating, assisted by Rev. H. G. Gieiser, pastor of the Sidney Presbyterian church. Interment was in Locust Grove cemetery.

Ref: Maro Johnson – John Osborne Love was born in Malinmore Parish, County Donegal, Feb. 1795, and came to America with his wife, Eleanor, whom he married Feb. 19, 1821, and with four children, in 1838.
In the Coshocton Co., OH history, he names his parents as Thomas Love and Susan Osobrn, his paternal grandparents as John Osborn and Nellie McKee, and his mother’s parents as John Osborn and Bess Ellis. He also mentions Elizabeth Farquar as a great-grandparent, on which side he does not tell.
The circumstances of his coming and his wife Eleanor’s ancestry are set out elsewhere. He became a farmer in Keene Township of Coshocton Co., OH. Both he and his wife were seen by the writer as a small child in 1880, when they were past 80 years old. Both John and Eleanor died soon after 1880. Their daughter, Jane, who was twelve when they came over, has given the only clue to where the family lived in Ireland. When asked near what town or village she lived in Donegal, she named Killybegs and Bally Shannon. Charles was also mentioned as the site of a fair.

Ref: (Sprague History) John lived on the Love farm and he and his Father, James, built a cabin in the orchard for the last member of the family to come to America - Eleanor Love, who had married in Ireland to John Osborn Love (not related). They arrived in New York in 1838, went up the Hudson River to the Lake Erie Canal, then the Ohio Canal to Roscoe, Ohio. Susan, their last child, was born August 24, 1838, just six weeks after they arrived at her brother, John's home. They lived in this cabin until they died. It is thought they died in 1881. They had been in America about four years when her sister, Fannie Love McKee, living in Plainfield, Ohio, died in 1842.
When Fannie died she asked that her sister, Eleanor Love, take the youngest child, James to raise.

(Communicated Feb. 18, 1899). “In the years of 1852 and 1853, there was a class of 8 boys, of 15 and 16 years of age, attended school in the old log school house in the McClure district, in the north-east corner of Bethlehem Township, Coshocton Co., OH. They were John M. Finlay, Robert Doak, James Stewart, James Mulford, Merril Corwee, Emanuel Spangler, Thomas Love and Isaac Stafford. John M. Finlay was the only one of the class who did not see service in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. Thomas Love died last week at his home in Defiance, Ohio. Isaac Stafford alone remaining of that class”…
Let me say a few words about Mr. Love. Columns have been written and eulogies pronounced on many of the soldiers that were not equal. Born absolutely with out fear, he was one of the bravest soldiers that ever wore a blouse. I saw him in August, 1864 on picket line, when some of the men had been stampeded, take those men back on the line as fearlessly as though he was in no danger and the men following him as the weak always follow the strong command. Mr. Love was 63 years old last July. “The female members of that class were Emily Spangler, now Mrs. T. H. Elliott, of Coshocton, OH, Mary Spangler, now Mrs. J. E. Ling Elliott, IA, Susan Love, now Mrs. Andrew Karr, Keene, OH, Nancy Stewart, now Mrs. Nancy McGee, Keene, OH, Ann Jane Finaly, now Mrs. Joseph J. Finaly, Harding Co., OH, and Ruth Spangler who died of measles. Only one of the girls is gone and only one of the boys is living (signed) Isaac Stafford.”
“Recorders Office in the Defiance Co., OH Court House.” A record states, on the 23rd of March 1882, that Thomas Love from Coshocton, OH, bought 80 acres of land from Emma & Abraham McKinsey at the sum of “Twenty six hundred and fifty dollars” situated in the county of Defiance, in the State of Ohio, and in the township of Defiance, and bounded and described as follows:… Being the South East quarter of the South East quarter of Section No. (14), Township No (3), North of range No. (4) East. The above described premises containing in all 80 acres of land. Exception one half acre off the North West corner – there of literally deeded for school. It was known as “Love School”.

In the spring of the year 1996 the old homestead house burnt down completely. There has been a new house erected in it’s placed. Finished in 1997. A photo of Thomas R. & Mary Jane (Endsley) Love and family is in the possession of a granddaughter Wilma (Love) Sponsler from Defiance, OH.
