Love, of Keokuk, IA. Forty years ago Mr. Love was a well-known citizen of Coshocton – then a lawyer here of marked ability, and a highly respected citizen. He came as a young man from McConnellsville to Coshocton about 1840 or soon thereafter and establishing himself in the practice of the law here soon secured a lucrative practice. At the breaking out of the Mexican War, he enlisted with others here at Coshocton, and was made a Lieutenant of the Company B, F. Sel’s and other ex-soldiers here were members of this Company. Upon the resignation of Captain Meredith, at Mattamoras, Mexico, Love was elected Captain and served with credit tot he end of that War. He returned to Coshocton and resumed the practice of the law. In 1852 or 1854 Love was made the Democratic nominee for Congress in this District, but was defeated at the election by John Johnson. Soon thereafter, he moved to Iowa, and located at Keokuk, where he acquired much legal business, and grew rapidly in public favor. During the administration of President Buchanan, Mr. Love was appointed a Judge of the United States District Court, which position he filled until the time of his death, and so discharged the duties of that high judicial position as to win for him the reputation of an able and upright Judge. He was thirty-six years on the Bench, and at the time of his death, his age was more than three score and ten.
