James was born March 16, 1851 in Johnson County Iowa. According to the 1870 U. S. Census, he was living at home on a farm in Johnson County residing in Scott Township, post-office Iowa City. James married Harriet N. Westcott December 22, 1873 and they lived on a farm in Johnson County, until at least the end of 1874. Sometime after 1874 James and Hattie moved to Clear Lake Cerro Gordo County IA staying there until at least 1877 (see Note below). While in Clear Lake, James belonged to the Clear Lake Cornet Band playing Baritone. He was also the band’s engagement manager. Several references to other Cornet Bands were found in newspapers of the period so they must have been a popular form of entertainment during the 1870’s and 1880’s. The 1880 census confirms that the other band members were from Clear Lake. The family moved back to Johnson County by June of 1880. They were living in Shueyville in northern Johnson County in August 1891. James was an alcoholic for a long time as he noted in an article in the Iowa City Daily Citizen May 20, 1893 where he gave a testimonial for his cure by the Clark Gold Cure Institute in Iowa City located at 29 Madison Street. James sold watches and other jewelry in Montezuma Iowa, 60 miles west of Iowa City at some point as reflected in a business card that exists. He moved to Iowa City sometime after 1895 (in Iowa City in 1900 census). (He was a republican in politics. Source: History of Johnson County IA 1836-1882, pub. 1883 in Iowa City, p.830.) According to the 1915 Johnson County Iowa Census James was a resident of the Hospital for inebriatis. He died December 30, 1918 (as verified by Iowa City Citizen of Jan 3, 1919) in Iowa City and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City IA.

Note: A part of a ledger that records alcohol sales from 1870 to 1875 exists (it was used by Hattie to paste recipes on) and seems to be, based on comparison to 1870 census data, for a location in Lake Township of Cerro Gordo County IA. James’ son Benjamin was born in Clear Lake in this county in 1877 so this might be from some related establishment. The family lived there for a period of time between 1874 and 1880. The ledger lists as the reason for the sale as “medicinal” since Iowa had prohibition to alcohol during this time. In 1855 the state legislature prohibited the sale of alcohol, but local governments did not always enforce the laws. It was repealed in 1933 with the national end to prohibition.

Hattie was born September 27, 1855 in Milford New York (65 miles west of Albany) to Moses A. Westcott and Lydia Caroline Goodrich. She moved to a farm in Johnson County Iowa in 1857. By January 27, 1893 Hattie had moved to Iowa City with the 5 children (she and James were separated by then and she later divorced James in about 1895). In 1910 Hattie and son Sennett were living with the Louis Schump family in Iowa City (same person who owned the company George Hermann worked for). While in Iowa City Hattie was active in several civic societies including the Royal Neighbors and the Iowa City Homestead No. 924 Brotherhood of American Yeoman. She moved to Hinckley Minnesota in about 1914 to live with Daughter Effie Hermann and her family. Hattie was admitted into the Daughters of the American Revolution April 27, 1925 (No 211228) based on her Great-Great-Great Grandfather Nathan Westcott’s participation in the Revolutionary War. Harriet died October 8, 1933 (Cert No 011371) in Hinckley and is buried in Brook Park Cemetery MN.

Children: Edith Young, Benjamin W., Effie Hermann, Sennett I. (Jim), and Jane Farnsworth. (See Appendix A)

Siblings were Edith S. (William) Orr of Waterloo Iowa, Sennett R. Westcott of Minneapolis Minnesota, Cora (died at age 11) and Laura S. (William) Scollard of Watford City North Dakota.

The great-great uncle of William Scollard – Matthew Thornton, a member of the Continental Congress from New Hampshire, was one of signers of Declaration of Independence (signature located in lower right-hand corner of original document).

The group was formed at the University of Colorado by students Bryan Sennet, Mike Brovsky and Brooks Hatch. They assembled a group that comprised nine members including vocalists Lynne Weintraub, Diane Decker and Tommy Tieman, guitarists John Madden and Jon Arbenz and bass player Bob Young. The group began to perform on college campuses, mostly in the Western United States.
The Serendipity Singers became more noticeable following a performance at the Bitter End in New York’s Greenwich Village. They appeared on the scene shortly after groups such as Peter, Paul and Mary and the New Chisty Minstrels had helped to make folk music popular. The Serendipity Singers projected a squeaky clean image. In the Spring of 1964 their song Don’t Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man) was a top ten hit. They appeared on the popular television show Hootenanny. The group followed with their final top forty song, Beans In My Ears, later in 1964.
Bob Dylan took folk music electric and the British Invasion began, and the type of music with which the Serendipity Singers were associated went out of style. The group continued to record albums and perform live and occasionally on television. Following a number of personnel changes they were still going in 1990’s.

Ref: Ventura (Official Name San Buenaventura) CA, Wed. 15 Oct. 1952, pg. 1 - Elderly Angler Drowns - Benjamin Graham, 76, of 176 N. Alvardo street, Meiners Oaks, left yesterday afternoon for one of his frequent fishing trips at the lake behind Matilija dam.
An ardent fisherman, the retired Spanish-American war veteran had just purchased a new fishing rod.
The trip ended in tragedy early today as searchers recovered his body in 10 feet of water, first drowning in the reservoir since the dam’s completion in 1946.
Deputy sheriffs William Woodard and Floyd Wickline said he evidently lost his footing and slipped down a steep bank into the water. They estimated that Mr. Graham drowned shortly after his arrival at the reservoir, between 3 and 4 p.m.
The search began last night when Mrs. Ann Graham reported her husband had failed to return from the fishing trip.
The body was found about 2:30 a.m. by Paul Malone, a member of the searching party.
Woodard and Wickline said they found Mr. Graham’s cigarettes, bait and fishing equipment laid out on the bank.
He evidently fell into the water before he had a chance to use his new fishing pole, they said.
Ref: Ventura Star, 16 Oct. 1952, pg. 2, Ventura, CA - A heart condition and not drowning caused the death of Benjamin W. Graham Tuesday night, a coroner’s office autopsy revealed.
The 76-year old man’s body was pulled from Matilija reservoir yesterday morning. He had left his home at 176 N. Alvarado street, Meiners Oaks, on the preceding afternoon to try out a new fishing pole at the reservoir.
A search began for him after his wife, Mrs. Ann Graham became alarmed when he did not return home. His body was found in the water.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Clausen funeral home in Ojai. The Rev. William Gearhart will officiate. Burial will be at Ivy Lawn.
Mr. Graham was born Feb. 16, 1876, in Iowa. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American war and had lived in Ventura county for the past nine years. He was a retired precision toolmaker.

Benjamin W. (born February 16, 1877 at Clear Lake Cerro Gordo County IA – noted in Graham family bible (See note below). He was the only sibling born at a location different from Johnson County. Ben wrote a column in the Iowa City newspaper of his experiences in the Army in the Philippines in 1904. He returned from the Philippines in April 1905. In September 1918 WWI Draft Registration Ben was living in Atascadero San Luis Obispo County CA and listed Della Graham, his wife also from Atascadero. In 1920 Ben and Dell were living in Detroit Michigan with another family, where he was a machinist in a factory. February 25, 1922, the Iowa City Press Citizen has Della and Benjamin being granted a divorce, with her keeping the house. In 1925 and 1930 Della Graham was divorced and living in Iowa City IA with her widowed mother Josephine Alberkaskz (Alberhasky, Albrohackey, father James). In 1900 she was at home in Iowa City but was gone by 1910.

Benjamin married Ann Le Glatin (see note below) and lived in Ormond, California. Harriet Ann (Graham) Wise was born in September 28, 1928 to Ben and Ann. Ben ran a machine shop in Meiners Oaks CA prior to his retirement. He died of a heart attack while fishing in the Matilija Lake behind Matilija Dam in Ventura County CA October 14, 1952. SSN 554106542. He and Ann are buried in Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura County CA.

Note: A wedding announcement for Henry A. Wilcox and Mary A. Boeye, married in Clear Lake IA May 13, 1878 is in the family records. The same Henry was a Lawyer living in Des Moines IA in 1880 and Chisago IL in 1900. The marriage time period coincides with Ben’s birth in Clear Lake and Mary Boeye’s family were most likely neighbors of James and Hattie during their time in Clear Lake. The 1895 Iowa census indicates that Ben was born in Clayton County but that is most probably an error.

Note: Ann was born August 11, 1889 in Saint Mary, Jersey Isle, England to Jean Baptiste (John) Le Glatin and Anne Jane Syvret and died in San Pedro CA July 19, 1970. Ann was married to Frank Windfeldt in about 1908 and he was not living with Ann in 1910. They apparently had at least 2 children:
