SSRI use associated with apathy among depressed elderly

Case-control of 384 depressed elderly divided into SSRI and non-SSRI groups studied with GDS-apathy and HAMD-apathy subscale at discharge- apathy greater in SSRI group

384 elderly depressed patients from geriatric day care database receiving antidepressants.

Retrospective records from database that identified 2 groups of patients with SSRI use versus non-SSRI.

SSRI group predictor for apathy as measured by Geriatric Depression and Hamilton Rating apathy subscales OR 1.9 (1.14 – 3.17)

Time course- measuring reduction in apathy associated with depression rather than as a new effect.

Study unclear on new onset apathy.

Non-random population- query reason for use of non-SSRI medications
