Is antidepressant use associated with difficulty identifying feelings

Cross-sectional study comparing 57 patients on serotonergic antidepressants and 441 controls using Toronto Alexithymia Scale

Based on FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study: study population cohort 3.808 women attending ultrasound. 2,876 filled in Alexithymia questionnaire and those on SSRI or reported history of depression selected.

All serotonergic antidepressants included, not limited to SSRIs

Significant difference in Difficulty Identifying Feelings scores p=0.43, 14.2 vs 15.5

Cross-sectional design – causality cannot be inferred
