Are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors associated with greater apathy in Parkinson’s disease

Cross-sectional study

Convenience sample of 181 individuals followed at centre for movement disorders

35 individuals taking SSRI, 25 taking non-SSRI.

Patients on SSRI more likely to be apathetic (chi-squared=8.916; p=0.005)

Causality difficult to ascertain, possible SSRI’s do not treat apathy

Popovic et al.24 2015

Cognitive tolerability following.. treatment.. with SSRI antidepressants (including apathy)

Cross-sectional study: 67 treated with SSRI assessed for cognitive symptoms

67 patients treated at outpatient clinic, with SSRI for at least 6 months

Several self-rating scales including MGH cognitive and physical functioning questionnaire

Most frequent cognitive complaints were inattentiveness, forgetfulness, mental slowing, apathy (6% with moderate to severe and 10% with mild

P value 0.953impairment)

-Attempted to separate anxiety and depression groups to account for confounding symptoms. However depressive symptoms not adjusted for

- As in other cross-sectional studies, causality impossible to conclude

- not a significant result with a p-value of 0.953
